answer text <p>Department officials meet with their counterparts from Network Rail on a weekly basis to discuss the progress of the South West Rail Resilience Programme.</p><p> </p><p>The Department has so far committed approximately £140m towards the development and delivery of the South West Rail Resilience Programme. Funding for further phases of the Programme will be considered in accordance with Rail Network Enhancement Pipeline principles supported by a business case.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The following investment has been provided for the Programme via the Rail Network Enhancement Pipeline:</p><ul><li>Development funding - £17.2m</li><li>Phase 1 &amp; 2 (Dawlish sea wall) - £85.3m</li><li>Phase 3 (Parsons Tunnel rock fall shelter) - £37.44m</li></ul><p> </p><p>Phase 4 (cliff protection measures between tunnels) will be submitted for investment approval in Autumn 2021. Phase 5 (Parsons Tunnel to Teignmouth) is at an earlier development stage and is currently the subject of an optioneering exercise being undertaken by Network Rail.</p><p><strong> </strong></p><p> </p>

answer text <p>There are no immediate plans to electrify all or part of the Great Western mainline between Penzance, Plymouth and Paddington in the next Network Rail control period. However, Network Rail is currently preparing a Traction Decarbonisation Network Strategy (TDNS), which is due to report in 2020. This will indicate where routes might be electrified or where hydrogen or battery trains could be deployed. The TDNS will therefore inform future decisions about electrification.</p> more like this

Development of projects that deliver journey time improvements in the southwest peninsula are included in Network Rail’s recently published Strategic Business Plan for Control Period 6 (2019-2024). The Government expects to announce details of the process for determining new rail infrastructure enhancements in CP6 shortly.</p><p> </p><p>My Department will respond to the Peninsula Rail Task Force imminently.</p> more like this

answer text <p>We will continue to engage with the Peninsula Rail Task Force (PRTF) and other interested parties as the planning for Network Rail’s work programme for the period starting in April 2019 and the development of the specifications for the future Great Western and Cross Country franchises unfold.</p><p> </p><p>The work of the Peninsula Rail Task Force continues to be a valuable part of the process for defining our priorities for investment after 2019.</p><p> </p><p>New enhancements will be taken forward through a new process in the form of a pipeline, designed to ensure investment best addresses the needs of passengers and freight, and that funding commitments appropriately reflect the stage of development of enhancements.</p><p> </p> more like this
