We recently donated £8 million to UNICEF, WFP and FAO to provide clean water, food and nutrition to over 500,000 people most affected by the current drought. This includes work that we cannot breakdown geographically such as our funding to the Global Environment Facility and our work on curbing illicit financial flows. We also invest substantial sums in tackling deforestation which helps to protect habitats for endangered species such as the Sumatran tiger and Asian elephant. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 05/06/2019 answer text <p>The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the DRC is one of DFID’s key emergency priorities. Although a challenging security context is significantly hampering response activities, an experimental vaccine has been deployed throughout the response to good effect, and has likely saved thousands of lives.</p><p>The UK Government is committed to promoting respect for International Humanitarian Law. We strongly condemn repeated attacks and threats of violence directed towards health facilities and health workers who are working towards ending this outbreak. Health workers are not a target. The response must balance protecting health workers with not using security in a way that further escalates mistrust or violence. This is something that the UK has been advocating since the beginning of the outbreak. A network of Country Offices enables DFID to ensure we have staff with expert local knowledge and the ability to work directly with local partners.</p><p> </p><p>The rules that govern our programming stress the importance of ensuring that the views and experiences of citizens and beneficiaries inform the design and delivery of our programmes. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 23/05/2019 answer text <p><strong></strong></p><p>The UK is committed to meeting the needs of all internally displaced persons, whether they are displaced as a result of conflict or natural disasters. <em> </em>DFID provides funding to key agencies involved in responding to the needs of internally displaced persons, including the Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).</p><p> </p><p>The UK is a significant humanitarian donor in many countries with displaced populations. For example in South Sudan, in 2017/18 our support reached over 420,000 people with food assistance, over 370,000 women and children with nutrition support, and over 680,000 people with access to safe drinking water and/or improved sanitation facilities, many of whom are internally displaced. In Iraq, DFID support has helped provide food assistance to over 408,000 people, emergency cash transfers to over 274,000 people, and life-saving healthcare services to over 4.1m people, including those internally displaced. Additionally, in Syria where there are over 6 million of internally displaced persons, DFID has spent over £1 billion in humanitarian response.</p><p> </p><p>The UK has provided £36 million in response to Cyclone Idai which is estimated to have affected 2.6 million people in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. UK support includes the provision of an estimated 7,550 shelter kits and 100 family tents in Mozambique, emergency shelter for 65,000, food assistance for 150,000 people for two months in Malawi and health and child protection assistance in Zimbabwe.</p><p> </p><p>Furthermore the UK is working with UN Member states and the Secretary General to establish a High level Panel on Internally Displaced People, with aim of galvanising action to reduce the numbers of internally displaced people provide more effective protection and assistance.</p><p> </p> answering member constituency South West Wiltshire answering member printed Dr Andrew Murrison question first answered 23/05/2019 15:27:21 answering member 1466 label Biography information for Dr Andrew Murrison

Our Ambassador and senior DFID officials have raised this with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Peace, that all IDP returns must be voluntary, safe and sustainable. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 21/05/2019 answer text <p>The UK is the third largest donor to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative and has committed £1.3 billion in total since 1995. In Afghanistan GPEI are working to reach mobile populations where children have been chronically missed by vaccination campaigns. In Nigeria activities are focussed on trying to reach all children with vaccinations to close immunity gaps that allow polio to remain.</p><p> </p><p>The UK are observers on the Polio Oversight Board and represent all state donors on the Strategy Committee, which gives us a position from which to influence the activities of the fund at a strategic level. It is clear however that the world is not on track to avoid dangerous climate change and environmental damage. The Secretary of State wants to see what more we can do with the UK’s aid budget and how we can encourage others to take more action. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 07/05/2019 answer text <p>The UK is deeply concerned about the spread of anti-vaccine misinformation in Pakistan and its potential to undermine the hard-fought gains that have been made in protecting children from vaccine preventable diseases. We are tackling this misinformation through our strong support of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) and Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance.
