We note Dame Cairncross’ recommendation that regulatory oversight be introduced as part of a ‘news quality obligation’ upon social media platforms.</p><p> </p><p>We will consider how this proposal can inform our approach, including through our work on the upcoming Online Harms White Paper. We regularly meet with the major social media companies to discuss their progress in tackling disinformation on their platforms including their use of fact-checking mechanisms.</p><p> </p><p>We are exploring options for addressing disinformation in the Online Harms White Paper, to be published shortly.
