answer text
The UK has made considerable progress so far in extending ultrafast broadband through full fibre and other connectivity technologies. According to thinkbroadband, over 52% of the UK has access to ultrafast speeds of 100 Megabits per second or more.

The Government’s aim is to provide ultrafast connectivity to as many businesses and homes as possible. We will achieve this by developing approaches to show how new investment from government and the private sector could transform the UK’s full fibre availability. We have set in train our investment plans for extending full fibre, investing £200m to fund locally-led projects across the UK to leverage local and commercial investment in full fibre, beginning the first wave of projects in 2017.

We are preparing plans to introduce a full fibre connection voucher for companies across the country by 2018. As we announced on the 3rd July, the £400 million Digital Infrastructure Investment Fund will unlock over £1 billion for full fibre broadband, and kick-start better broadband connections across the country. answer text
We hold regular discussions with broadband providers about improving broadband speeds and coverage to all parts of the UK. Considerable progress has been made with only 1 per cent of all UK premises unable to access speeds of 2 Megabits per second or better in December 2016 compared to 11 per cent in 2010.

Through the Government’s Better Broadband Scheme, all homes and businesses can now access broadband speeds of at least 2 Megabits per second which is fast enough for everyone to be able to use government services online. These scheme vouchers can be aggregated amongst the community and used collectively as part of a community solution. Further information can be found at: https://basicbroadbandchecker.culture.gov.uk/,

Broadband providers are increasing their commercial investment guaranteeing higher speeds and extended coverage. They are also responding positively to community-led schemes designed to improve broadband speeds and coverage. Further information can be found at: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/community-led-broadband-schemes

answer text
BDUK's State aid clearance from the European Commission has been given on the basis that deployment will be predominantly in rural and remote areas. These areas are not defined by the Commission, although BDUK has provided information to the Commission on how interventions will be targeted using population densities

The Superfast Broadband Programme aims to maximise coverage within the framework set by the State aid regime. BDUK therefore undertakes an assessment of each project to ensure that it is consistent with the State aid requirements. Projects have not been taken forward in London or Birmingham, and the eligible areas for other projects which include cities within their scope have been assessed on the basis that coverage is targeted at rural and urban fringe areas. BDUK therefore does not measure rural and urban deployment.
more like this
