The coup has plunged Myanmar into a deep political and humanitarian crisis and
exacerbated conflict. Over 2000 people have been killed by the military regime, over
690,000 people have been displaced by military operations and 14.4 million people
are now in need of humanitarian assistance. We consistently raise these issues with
counterparts, including at the UN, G7 and ASEAN, to try and bring an end to the crisis.
For example, on the anniversary of the coup on 1 February, we coordinated a joint
Foreign Minister-level statement calling for de-escalation and a return to democracy,
and on 27 March we coordinated a statement, signed by 47 countries, on working together
to prevent the flow of arms to Myanmar.
