Reporters Without Borders (RSF) reported that 80 journalists and media workers were killed in 2018. An additional 300 are currently in detention and 60 are being held hostage. We are very concerned about the high number of countries using restrictive laws to stifle freedom of expression and prevent the functioning of an independent media.</p><p> </p><p>The UK believes that access to fair and accurate information is the lifeblood of democracy. As such we are committed to the promotion of media freedom and the protection of journalists, which is why we have launched a global Media Freedom Campaign for 2019. Our aim is to shine a spotlight on media freedom, and in so doing to raise the cost to those abusing it. The BIOT Marine Protected Area (MPA) is highly valued by scientists from many countries who consider it a global reference site for marine conservation in an ocean which is heavily overfished. Ministers are committed to further consultation with Mauritius about the establishment of the MPA in order to have due regard to its rights and interests, as directed by the Arbitral Tribunal of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. This would include the Acquisition of Land for Public Purposes Ordinance 1983, which confirms and declares that all land in the Territory is Crown Land. Before any disposition of land could lawfully be made, this Ordinance would require amendment or repeal. The British military has some of the highest standards in the world in how they conduct themselves in armed conflicts. We always seek to avoid civilian casualties and we are happy to share our hard-won experience with our partners. We channel UK funds through UN agencies and international Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) with a strong record of delivering and monitoring assistance.
