Through its public sector land programme, the government plans to dispose of sufficient
land for 160,000 homes over the course of this Parliament. Local authority land has
the potential to make a real difference to local housing supply. For example, independent
estimates suggest that a third of the land in Bristol is owned by local government
bodies, and, although not all of this land will be suitable for development, this
does offer potential to unlock land to help increase housing supply.
