That this House believes that Edexcel's initial decision to discontinue the AS and
A-level Modern Greek examinations from 2017 is deeply regrettable; recognises that
the Greek language is one of the official languages of the EU, spoken in two member
states, Greece and the Republic of Cyprus, and that the policy of the EU on languages
is to support language learning and linguistic diversity; notes that it states that
the Greek language has the longest documented history of any Indo-European language,
spanning 34 centuries of written records, and forms the basis for a number of modern
languages and therefore holds an important place in the history and indeed the future
of Europe; further believes that, given this context and the fact there are significant
numbers of people of Greek origin living across the UK, the AS and A-level Modern
Greek qualifications should be retained; and calls on the Government to take steps
to ensure exam boards do offer AS and A-level Modern Greek.
