motion text That this House notes that 21 November 2018 will be the centenary of the Qualification of Women Act when women were first allowed to stand for Parliament; recognises that this is a great cause for celebration, being a considerable step forward for British democracy; further notes that over the last 100 years there have been only 290 women hon. Members compared to 4,503 men, and that at the last election only 12 extra women were elected, meaning that at this rate of change it will take over 50 years for the House to achieve gender balance; further recognises the important role that women play in our society, being over 50 per cent of the UK population; and calls on the Government to use this centenary to celebrate women and inspire them in standing for Parliament by encouraging all hon. Members to invite a women from their parliamentary constituency to Westminster that day for the purpose of shadowing their work and to attend a inspirational celebratory event to be staged in Westminster Hall culminating in asking those women present to embark upon a career in politics by asking them to stand and take the next step along the path to Parliament.

motion text That this House notes with concern that microplastic pollution is potentially more environmentally damaging than larger pieces of plastic because small pieces of plastic are more likely to be eaten by wildlife and have a greater surface area which can transfer chemicals to and from the marine environment; welcomes the Government's legislation on microbeads; further notes that the wider issue of microplastic pollution cannot be set aside, and supports the Environmental Audit Committee's recommendations that the Government works towards a systematic strategy for researching and mitigating sources of microplastic pollution, particularly in relation to synthetic fibres which are shed from synthetic clothing when laundered; notes that there is little evidence on potential human health impacts of microplastic pollution; calls on the Government to set a timescale within which it will publish an assessment of the potential health impacts and any measures it intends to take as a response; and further calls on the Government to continue international cooperation to address microplastic pollution and take on a leading role in addressing the issue.

motion text That this House notes the Government's publication of the Civil Liability Bill; supports the Government's intention to reduce fraudulent and frivolous claims; expresses concern that vulnerable road users (VRUs), including cyclists, pedestrians, horse riders and motorcyclists, will be swept up within the scope of the Bill and the broader personal injury reform package, despite there being no evidence that non-fault road traffic accident injuries suffered by VRUs include whiplash; further notes that almost all whiplash claims are made by drivers or passengers of motor vehicles; believes that VRUs deserve the Government's protection, as opposed to removing their rights to redress for injuries under Tort; acknowledges that under such reforms, VRUs suffering injuries below £5,000 in value will be unable to access a lawyer should they wish to pursue their rights of redress in the Courts; and urges the Government to take a pragmatic approach and remove VRUs from the scope of the reforms to ensure they remain protected on the UK's roads.

motion text That this House is deeply concerned that the UK detains people indefinitely under immigration rules, is the only country in Europe without a time limit on detention and that people can be detained for months and years on end without knowing when they will be released; notes that in the year to June 2017, 27,819 people were detained and that of the nearly 3,000 people detained in June 2017 over half had been locked up for more than 28 days, 271 people for over six months and that 52 per cent of those released from detention were returned to the community; observes that successive reports by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in 2012, the All-Party Parliamentary Groups on Migration and Refugees in 2015 and Stephen Shaw in 2016 have demonstrated indefinite detention to have a damaging effect on the health of the people concerned; and calls on the Government urgently to reform immigration detention by introducing a 28-day time limit. more like this

motion text That this House welcomes the positive atmosphere in the talks between Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders, Nicos Anastasiades and Mustafa Akinci, the negotiators, Andreas Mavroyiannis and Ozdil Nami and the confidence building measures that are taking place, such as visits, plays and other events involving many Cypriots attended by both leaders; values the contribution made by Turkish Cypriots, in making Mustafa Akinci their leader in April 2015, to the positive attitudes expressed by Greek Cypriots in the recent University of Cyprus survey; acknowledges the remarkable work undertaken by the Committee for Missing Persons in identifying and returning remains of the missing to their relatives and by the Cultural Heritage Technical committee in renovating the Othello tower, mosques and churches; congratulates the Special Adviser of the United Nations Secretary General, Espen Barth Eide, for his meetings throughout Cyprus and for the setting up of the Gender Equality Technical Committee; hopes that this progress will not be interrupted by events in the Middle East or Turkey's elections on 1 November 2015; and calls on the Government to engage in any way possible, within the UN Security Council and the EU, to give positive support to a peaceful settlement to reunite the island and to form the basis of sustainable relationships between Cypriots themselves, Turkey, the European Union and the region as a whole.

motion text That this House believes that OCR's initial decision to discontinue the GCE AS and A-level Turkish examinations from 2017 is deeply regrettable; recognises that there are 100,000 Turkish speakers across the UK and, that with over 63 million speakers worldwide, it is one of the world's major languages; believes, given this context, that the GCE AS and A-level Turkish qualification should be retained; and calls on the Government to take steps to ensure that examination boards do offer AS and A-level Turkish. more like this

motion text That this House notes that, until recently, Botton Village, a Camphill Community of 60 years' standing, offered a shared way of life for learning-disabled adults alongside volunteer co-workers, living as equals, sharing home, work, culture and recreation; further notes that Camphill Village Trust (CVT) is now insisting that co-workers become employees, with living quarters segregated from residents; further notes that in 2012, concerns were raised, including on safeguarding, about how the volunteer co-worker model at Botton Village was being run, and in February 2014 the Charity Commission published an operational compliance report that stated that key trustees shared its concerns and were committed to addressing them urgently; further notes that the Commission's report does not state that the existing co-worker model was intrinsically problematic; also notes that the HM Revenue and Customs technical document BIM22040 sets out how to operate a volunteer co-working model; further notes that this model continues to operate at other Camphill communities in the UK; is concerned about reports from families of residents at Botton Village that the loss of the residents' chosen lifestyle, of their home and family life as they know it, and the removal of very dear friends, is causing distress to learning-disabled residents; and therefore urges CVT to work with the authorities to revert to a volunteer co-worker model at Botton Village; and calls on the Department of Health to work with the Care Quality Commission, HM Revenue and Customs and the Charity Commission to support those running intentional communities to ensure that the unique and successful volunteer co-worker model can continue.

motion text That this House believes that Edexcel's initial decision to discontinue the AS and A-level Modern Greek examinations from 2017 is deeply regrettable; recognises that the Greek language is one of the official languages of the EU, spoken in two member states, Greece and the Republic of Cyprus, and that the policy of the EU on languages is to support language learning and linguistic diversity; notes that it states that the Greek language has the longest documented history of any Indo-European language, spanning 34 centuries of written records, and forms the basis for a number of modern languages and therefore holds an important place in the history and indeed the future of Europe; further believes that, given this context and the fact there are significant numbers of people of Greek origin living across the UK, the AS and A-level Modern Greek qualifications should be retained; and calls on the Government to take steps to ensure exam boards do offer AS and A-level Modern Greek. more like this
