motion text That this House is dismayed that, despite the statement on page 17 of the Coalition Agreement that `We will introduce measures to make the import or possession of illegal timber a criminal offence', the Government is going to rely on weaker EU legislation; notes that last year the US made it illegal for a person or company to import, export, transport, sell, receive, acquire or purchase timber or timber products illegally taken, harvested, possessed, transported, sold or exported; and calls on the Government to do likewise and to honour its commitment to legislate on illegal timber. more like this

motion text That this House believes that Burma's military rulers are undermining the country's sovereignty, stability and peace, not the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) as alleged by the Myanmar Women's Federation; is deeply concerned about the ICRC's findings, made public last week, that the military routinely abuses the civilian population and detainees, subjecting them to numerous acts of violence, including murder, particularly in eastern Burma along the Thai border where fighting continues with ethnic minority insurgents; is dismayed that the Burmese military regime has prevented the ICRC from visiting political prisoners since 2005 and has recently imposed further restrictions on its humanitarian work; and calls upon the international community, as a matter of urgency, to address the suffering of the Burmese people, and to secure the release of Aung San Suu Kyi, jailed parliamentarians, and other political prisoners. more like this

motion text That this House deplores the sacking of Daily Mirror political correspondence Andy McSmith; notes that this is the first known case of the sacking of a Daily Mirror political writer for no other reason than his close and long standing involvement in the Labour Party, that it follows the forced departure from the Mirror of its political editor, Alastair Campbell, and its leading investigative journalist, Paul Foot, and many more of the best known Mirror journalists, that, since the departure of Paul Foot, the Mirror has sacked Bryan Rostron, a staff member for nine years who worked on the Paul Foot page, and is in the process of sacking their colleague, Margaret Renn, who recently took over as Mother of the NUJ chapel, after the forced departure of the Father of Chapel, Trevor Davies, that the list of those sacked by the present management includes the former industrial editor, Terry Pattinson, leader writer, David Thompson, and many other journalists and print workers; considers that the banks who have become the owners of Mirror Group Newspapers through their business dealings with the late Robert Maxwell recognise that the Daily Mirror and other papers in the group have been valuable assets because of their appeal as popular, campaigning, Labour-supporting newspapers; and beleives that this commercial and political advantage is being squandered by the present management and is in danger of being lost forever.
