motion text That this House believes the steel industry is fundamentally important to the future of UK manufacturing; further believes that there is an important role for manufacturing in rebalancing the UK economy; notes with concern the steep drop in demand for steel products and the consequent job losses; further notes that these job losses could result in a loss of skilled capacity for the steel industry and that such a skills shortage could restrict considerably the opportunities available for growth for steel when the economic upturn arrives; therefore welcomes the £5 million training package offered by the Government to Corus; and calls on the Government to do all it can to help the industry, including substantially increasing the amount of training support being offered to Corus to improve the skills of its workforce. more like this

motion text That this House welcomes the launch of Comprehensive Future, the campaign to modernise secondary school admission procedures; welcomes the Government's revised Code of Practice on School Admissions; further welcomes the publication of the Audit Commission/Ofsted Report 'The Influence of School Place Planning on Schools Standards and Social Inclusion'; notes the criticism of current admission procedures contained both in the June 2002 report from the Council of Tribunals and in the July 2002 report issued by the Schools Adjudicator; further notes the evidence of abuse of current procedures documented in research recently published by the London School of Economics; regrets that more children in England face overt and covert selective admission procedures to secondary school than in 1997; recognises the impracticality of the 1998 Grammar School Ballot Regulations; further regrets the denial of parental choice intrinsic to admission systems in which schools select children; notes the growing body of evidence linking selective systems of secondary education to lower overall levels of pupil achievement and higher levels of social exclusion; and calls on the Government (a) to request Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Schools to conduct an inquiry into the relationship between selective admission procedures, pupil achievement and post-16 participation rates and (b) to request the Social Exclusion Unit to conduct a parallel inquiry into the relationship between the structures of secondary education and levels of social exclusion.

motion text That this House welcomes the proposal to establish a new select committee covering the work of the Lord Chancellor's Department and associated legal offices; believes that this closes a gap in the scrutiny of government; notes that, while its stated remit is clear, the proposed name unlike that of other departmental select committees is imprecise and ambiguous; believes 'Justice and Constitutional Affairs Committee' could be misleading to members of the public wishing to make representations; and asks the Government to undertake consultation before putting a revised motion to establish such a committee before the House. more like this

motion text That this House is concerned at the upside-down way in which South Glamorgan Health Authority has itself set up three trust steering groups with only marginal connections with the provider units concerned to oversee the preparation of application for trust status at the University Hospital of Wales and Cardiff Royal Group of Hospitals, the community and priority nursing unit, and Velindre Cancer Hospital; and believes that this imposition of those steering groups by the health authority by secondment of senior staff on the relevant hospital or community health units entirely contradicts the Ministerial sales line on the spontaneous desire for self-management for those hospitals and community units and is an indication of how little there is in common between the reality of opinion at the hospital coalface on the one hand and the cosy world of health ministers and top management of the National Health Service establishment on the other. more like this
