The policy for installing the same traffic sign on both sides of minor (and all other) roads is set out in the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016, as amended, which provides for both one or two traffic signs. The relevant local authority has responsibility for deciding how many to place depending on site circumstance and their own local transport policy.

The Department for Transport does not hold any information about how much was spent on the installation and maintenance of traffic signs on minor roads in small villages in England in the financial year 2022–23 or whether the number of those traffic signs has increased over the past decade.

The Government continues to support both Afghanistan and Pakistan in their efforts to build and maintain a relationship that will enhance the security, stability and prosperity of both countries and the wider region. The Foreign Secretary, other Ministers, and senior officials speak regularly with leaders from the two countries about the importance of improving relations. The most recent Ministerial contact was during the visit by the Minister for Asia and the Pacific to Kabul on 1-2 October. On 15 March the Government facilitated a meeting between Afghanistan and Pakistan at which some progress was made to address the concerns of both sides. We continue to encourage the two countries to work together to tackle the threat of cross-border militancy, improve border management and encourage increased bilateral trade. We liaise closely with the US on this agenda.

The Government is committed to an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process, and this will need to include the Taliban. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is active in pursuit of that goal through diplomatic outreach and our programmatic work, including direct support to Afghanistan's Higher Peace Council. Our message to all parties involved is that a political solution is the only way to achieve lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan and the region. As President Ghani has previously said, the Taliban have a choice between peace and war. They must choose to help to rebuild Afghanistan. Whilst this work remains difficult,we are working with the Government of Afghanistan and all relevant international partners, including the US and Pakistan, to bring about a sustainable process as soon as possible.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4210", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon"} } , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2017-11-07", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2017-11-07T17:39:00.64Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "16"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Foreign and Commonwealth Office"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Foreign and Commonwealth Office"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2017-10-25", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Afghanistan: Pakistan"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "2"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25277", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Lords"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask Her Majesty's Government whether they are taking action to support peaceful dialogue between Afghanistan, Pakistan and the United States; if so, what; and what advice they have provided to the governments of those states in relation to dialogue with the Taliban.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/3470", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Ahmed"} } , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Lord Ahmed"} ], "uin" : "HL2490"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/606659", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Transport"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/606659/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

Highways England have plans to increase the speed limit on the A1 between Elkesley and Twyford Bridge to 70mph on the southbound carriageway through the new improvements. However, this cannot be implemented until works from the road safety audit have been addressed and new signs have been installed, which will be completed by March 2017.

There are also plans to increase the speed limit to 70mph on the northbound carriageway. However, the current speed limit will remain in place until an acceptable solution is found for the full closure of a direct access off the A1 to a private property and when the improvements have been made for a new alternative access
