The Turkish Government have said that over 300,000 people have fled their homes in the region. Our thoughts are with the victims of the PKK terrorist attacks, and the civilians who have been caught up in the violence. The Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my Rt Hon. Friend the Member for Runnymede and Weybridge (Mr Hammond), and the Minister for Europe, my Rt Hon. Friend the Member for Aylesbury (Mr Lidington), and our Ambassador to Turkey, have discussed with the Turkish government the importance of respecting human rights and avoiding civilian casualties in the fight against terrorism. The Government introduced the Modern Slavery Act 2015 which gives law enforcement agencies the tools to tackle modern slavery and human trafficking and a maximum life sentence for perpetrators. The Government takes all allegations of mistreatment or torture extremely seriously. We have raised Mr Adorus\u2019 allegations of mistreatment during his detention in Ethiopia on numerous occasions, including at Ministerial level. The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my hon. Friend the Member for Boston and Skegness (Mr Simmonds), spoke with Foreign Minister Tedros about the case on 11 July. We have reminded the Ethiopian government of its obligations under the Convention against Torture, to which it is a signatory, to follow up on allegations through an independent, impartial and transparent investigation. We will continue to do so and provide all appropriate consular support to Mr Adorus, raising any welfare issues with the Ethiopian authorities to ensure that he is properly looked after.<\/p>
