The legal profession in England and Wales operates independently of government. The responsibility for regulating the sector sits with the approved regulators, overseen by the Legal Services Board (LSB). The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) is responsible for regulating the professional conduct of solicitors, as well as most law firms in England and Wales. The SRA’s role involves protecting clients and the public.

The SRA works closely with firms to ensure that consumers’ interests are protected. Their website provides clear guidance for firms that are falling into administration and warns that they will intervene if consumers’ interests are at risk: https://www.sra.org.uk/solicitors/guidance/closing-down-your-practice/.

The SRA also provides guidance for consumers affected by their law firm’s closure: https://www.sra.org.uk/consumers/problems/solicitor-closed-down/intervention/.

The Legal Ombudsman (LeO) is also able to support consumers with concerns about law firms who are no longer operational. Their website provides information with regards to the different routes available for consumers depending on their personal circumstances https://www.legalombudsman.org.uk/for-consumers/factsheets/complaining-about-closed-service-providers/.

Firms that fall into administration have a duty to make former clients aware. Notably, there are requirements in respect of the advertising and publication of an insolvency so that creditors and other interested parties are made aware. Further detail on this can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/technical-guidance-for-official-receivers/4-publication-of-insolvency-information.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4004", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Mike Freer"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Finchley and Golders Green"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Mike Freer"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2024-01-22", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2024-01-22T16:28:45.277Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "54"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Justice"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Justice"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2024-01-17", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Solicitors: Insolvency"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, what steps his Department is taking to support clients of solicitors who fall into administration who (a) are being misinformed and (b) cease to be informed.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4243", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Dan Jarvis"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Barnsley Central"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Dan Jarvis"} ], "uin" : "10135"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1329646", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1329646/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

Fair and competitive digital markets sit at the heart of the government’s strategy on press sustainability. Central to our plans in this area is our pro-competition regime for digital markets, which will include an enforceable code of conduct to rebalance the relationship between publishers and platforms. No decisions have been taken on this yet but we expect to launch our consultation later in the year.

Given the global nature of digital technologies and markets, we recognise that we will be most effective if we work together. We therefore continue to monitor developments in this area internationally and to engage with other governments to understand their approaches.

We are discussing our approach to press sustainability in the context of digital markets with international partners through bilateral engagement and as part of our G7 presidency. The Secretary of State has raised the issue of press sustainability with his G7 counterparts with a view to promoting competitive, innovative digital markets while protecting the free speech and journalism that underpin our democracy and precious liberties.

The Government is doing all that it can to help those caught in the path of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The Government has been responding to the humanitarian needs as they have been identified by our teams on the ground and the local authorities. To date, almost 180 tonnes of DFID relief items have either arrived or been procured in the region, including much needed food, water, shelter kits, and solar lanterns. Recent assessments indicate that markets are opening in the region and we are keen to support these. The UK is funding the Pan American Health Organisation – the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organisation – to help meet the health needs of affected populations, including any specific issues related to infant feeding. DFID will continue to work closely with the local authorities to identify their needs and prioritise our response accordingly.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/1201", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Alistair Burt"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "North East Bedfordshire"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Alistair Burt"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2017-10-09", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2017-10-09T15:50:38.027Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "20"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "International Development"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "International Development"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2017-09-12", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Caribbean: Hurricanes and Tornadoes"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for International Development, what provision has been made for infant feeding within the Government's emergency response to Hurricane Irma.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4430", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Alison Thewliss"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Glasgow Central"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Alison Thewliss"} ], "uin" : "10135"} ], "itemsPerPage" : 10, "page" : 0, "startIndex" : 1, "totalResults" : 3, "type" : ["http://purl.org/linked-data/api/vocab#ListEndpoint", "http://purl.org/linked-data/api/vocab#Page"]} }
