On 30 September 2017, 227 women with a Welsh origin address are serving a custodial sentence.<\/p>
<\/p>
It is important to stress that it is not possible to infer from an address in Wales that an individual considers themselves Welsh. HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) cannot identify English and Welsh prisoners as information is not collated in this way.<\/p>
<\/p>
Around 97% of prisoners have an origin location - i.e. addresses that are recorded in our central IT system. If no address is given, an offender\u2019s committal court address is used as a proxy for the area in which they are resident.<\/p>

However, the needs of women are always taken into account when National Probation Service officers undertake pre-sentence assessments for courts and a suitable community-based proposal will be recommended for those whose level of risk is assessed as manageable in the community.
