Government is committed to mental health support and suicide prevention. In September, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) published the new Suicide prevention strategy for England and launched the Suicide Prevention Grant Fund which makes available £10 million from 2023 to 2025 to support suicide prevention. It is the responsibility of local integrated care boards (ICBs) to plan services to meet the needs of their communities, including deciding how much funding they provide for mental health services.

Later this year, we will publish a draft Mental Health Bill for pre-legislative scrutiny. This will set out proposed amendments to the Mental Health Act 1983 to ensure the legislation respects the patient’s voice and empowers individuals to shape their care and treatment. We have also committed to enact legislative changes to extend eligibility of independent mental health advocate services to all mental health inpatients, including informal patients.

In December 2021, we announced the launch of culturally appropriate advocacy pilots. These pilots will develop advocacy models to support people from ethnic minority backgrounds to understand their rights under the Mental Health Act and state individual needs and choices about their care and treatment. This will be piloted in four regions in England in inpatient and community settings. The outcomes of these pilots will be shared with partners in health and social care to provide a framework to support commissioning and delivery of culturally appropriate advocacy.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4680", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Gillian Keegan"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Chichester"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Gillian Keegan"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2022-05-17", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "groupedQuestionUIN" : {"_value" : "374"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2022-05-17T09:21:11.66Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "17"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Health and Social Care"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Health and Social Care"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2022-05-10", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Independent Mental Health Advocates"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what assessment he has made of the potential merits of introducing an immediate allocation of an Independent Mental Health Advocate for all those detained in hospital under section 2 of the Mental Health Act 1983.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4511", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Dr Rupa Huq"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Ealing Central and Acton"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Dr Rupa Huq"} ], "uin" : "375"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1313442", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1313442/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

The Government has introduced a range of measures to protect commercial tenants who are struggling to pay their rent during the pandemic, including a moratorium on evictions where a tenant cannot pay rent and protection from insolvency and debt recovery methods. A voluntary Code of Practice for rent negotiations was also published and endorsed by a broad range of stakeholders, and further guidance to accompany this was recently published.

A call for evidence to inform next steps on these measures closed on 4 May. This set out a range of options Government could take if landlords and tenants do not find agreement on outstanding arrears, including some aspects similar to that found in other countries including Australia. Government is now analysing responses and the potential merits of different options; and will make an announcement in due course.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4635", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Eddie Hughes"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Walsall North"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Eddie Hughes"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2021-05-17", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2021-05-17T11:53:54.443Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "7"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Housing, Communities and Local Government"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Housing, Communities and Local Government"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2021-05-11", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Business: Rents"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, whether he has made an assessment of the potential merits of adopting an Australian-style business rent relief scheme.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4511", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Dr Rupa Huq"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Ealing Central and Acton"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Dr Rupa Huq"} ], "uin" : "375"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1149081", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Work and Pensions"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1149081/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

Our local team in Peterborough are monitoring all new claims to benefits to identify where the claimant is a former employee of Thomas Cook so that they quickly receive the right level of support. We estimate that as of 15th October, 159 former Thomas Cook employees have visited Peterborough Jobcentre, of which 120 have made a claim to benefits and 39 have made a general enquiry about the support available. Additional staff from neighbouring offices are working from Peterborough Jobcentre on a temporary basis to meet any increased demand on our services.

We are working with a wide range of employers to provide support to former employees of Thomas Cook. As they are part of our national portfolio we do not readily hold details on those that are operating in Peterborough and Cambridgeshire and to provide this information would incur disproportionate cost. The Department is offering a range of support to anyone affected by the closure of Thomas Cook, through our Rapid Response Service and wider DWP services. For example, a local provider is offering a series of workshops for former Thomas Cook employees to explain the range of support available to help them find a job.

Rather than providing direct financial support, our team in Peterborough have provided staff to support with the organisation and delivery of two local jobs fairs, arranged by Thomas Cook and Opportunity Peterborough. The Thomas Cook event was attended by around 850 former employees and over 100 former employees visited the DWP stand at the Opportunity Peterborough event.

Meeting the independent school standards is a condition of continued registration for independent schools. All of them are inspected on a regular cycle. If a school does not meet the required standards, the Department for Education takes appropriate regulatory action to ensure that the situation is rectified in the shortest possible time, or the school is closed.

The department has underpinned this approach by commencing the relevant provisions of the Education and Skills Act 2008 (‘the Act’), so that the role of the three independent inspectorates, and Ofsted’s role in quality assurance of those inspectorates, is put on a statutory footing. In accordance with the Act, the independent school standards were revised and strengthened from January 2015, introducing a new leadership and management standard. These changes form part of the reform programme outlined by Lord Nash in his letter of 28 March 2014 to the Chair of the Select Committee.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/111", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Nick Gibb"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Bognor Regis and Littlehampton"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Nick Gibb"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2015-06-04", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2015-06-04T14:42:14.277Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "60"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Education"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Education"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2015-05-28", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Private Education: Regulation"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Education, what steps her Department is taking to ensure that all independent schools are abiding by the Independent Schools Regulations.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4111", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Tristram Hunt"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Stoke-on-Trent Central"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Tristram Hunt"} ], "uin" : "375"} ], "itemsPerPage" : 10, "page" : 0, "startIndex" : 1, "totalResults" : 6, "type" : ["http://purl.org/linked-data/api/vocab#ListEndpoint", "http://purl.org/linked-data/api/vocab#Page"]} }
