The UK has seventeen reciprocal social security agreements with EU Member States which are in use between some or all of the Crown Dependencies and the relevant EU country which provide for reciprocal uprating of state pension. The EU countries are: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden. In the event the UK leaves without a withdrawal agreement, the UK will keep the role of pre-existing Reciprocal Agreements with individual Member States under review. Whether these come back into force will be subject to discussion and agreement between the UK and the relevant EU Member State.

There are ten EU countries where there is no reciprocal social security agreement in place. Those countries are: Bulgaria, Czechia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.

The UK government has taken the necessary steps to protect the rights of citizens through legislation and set out the measures it will take in a no deal scenario. The measures are based on the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement in the policy paper: “Citizens’ Rights - EU citizens in the UK and UK nationals in the EU” dated 6 December 2018. For social security arrangements, the UK will have retained EU law allowing the UK to apply the current social security coordination rules to protect those in receipt or entitled to a UK State Pension or benefit, including where they live in the EU. St Helena’s most famous resident, Jonathan the tortoise, is looked after by the island vet who ensures a high-standard of care to the world’s oldest terrestrial animal. After much deliberation on the island, the vet decided removing Jonathan’s cataracts was too high-risk a procedure. I reassure the noble Lord that despite being over 187 years old, Jonathan continues to lead an active life. The climate on St Helena, while perfect for diving and mountain walking, is not conducive to breeding this species of tortoise. The increasing number of flights to St Helena from South Africa is providing a welcome boost to St Helena’s tourism industry, and will allow even more people to meet this much loved member of the St Helena community.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4210", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon"} } , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2019-01-31", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2019-01-31T14:27:06.753Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "16"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Foreign and Commonwealth Office"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Foreign and Commonwealth Office"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2019-01-23", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "St Helena: Tortoises"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "2"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25277", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Lords"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask Her Majesty's Government what consideration they have given to authorising the removal of cataracts under local anaesthetic for Jonathan, the giant tortoise living in the grounds of the residence of the Governor of St Helena; and what assessment they have made of the impact that carrying out such an operation would have on (1) the island’s wider giant tortoise population, and (2) tourism to the island.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/248", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Jones of Cheltenham"} } , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Lord Jones of Cheltenham"} ], "uin" : "HL13067"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1045446", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1045446/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

The Environment Agency (EA) undertakes a wide range of monitoring in the River Thames, including some exploratory monitoring for cocaine, to manage water quality and inform future regulatory approaches where appropriate.

The EA is working with Thames Water and other water companies to undertake extensive investigations to assess a wide range of chemicals entering rivers through wastewater treatment works. The investigations have shown that wastewater treatment works significantly reduce the concentrations of many chemicals before they are discharged to rivers. Although cocaine is not part of these investigations, it is likely that it will be similarly affected by wastewater treatment.

The Thames Tideway Tunnel, which is currently in construction and will be operational by 2023, will significantly reduce the frequency and volume of discharges of storm sewage and improve water quality in the tidal Thames. This will reduce levels of associated chemicals in the tidal river.
