On World Cancer Day, 4 February 2022, the Secretary of State held a roundtable discussion with several cancer charities, followed by a speech on cancer in England. The Department also launched a Call for Evidence on World Cancer Day, which will feed into a new 10-year cancer plan to be published later this year.

Public awareness campaigns have been delivered under the NHS England and NHS Improvement ‘Help Us Help You’ umbrella, which is designed to encourage more effective use of the NHS by encouraging people to get help in the right place at the right time and raise awareness of cancer symptoms. Three new awareness campaigns, tackling cervical screening, prostate cancer, and barriers to seeking treatment, will be launched over the next month. The phases of the campaign that have run to date have contributed to the high levels of urgent cancer referrals the NHS has seen since March 2021.

The Department’s communications team also secured 14 national stories, 14 regional pieces, and 18 online stories.

The UK is deeply concerned by worsening drought conditions in Kenya as well as in neighbouring countries. On 17 January, I announced a package of emergency humanitarian support budgeted at £17 million to assist nearly one million people across the East Africa region impacted by drought and other humanitarian pressures. From this package Kenya received help to deliver life-saving nutritional assistance to 26,000 children in areas worst affected by drought.

Since 2007, the UK has provided over £160 million of assistance to the Kenyan Government to establish an early warning system on drought and create a social protection system that regularly reaches 100,000 poor and vulnerable households (c.600,000 people) through cash transfers. During drought, the Kenyan Government uses this system to reach an additional 275,000 households (c.1.6 million people), helping meet urgent needs like food and water. UK support makes a difference on the ground. In past two years, we have supported the programme's transition to a more sustainable, long-term model under Kenyan Government ownership and financing. UK funding for such programmes, which seek to reduce poverty and improve resilience of households in arid and semi-arid lands, will continue. The UK has also provided expertise to the Kenyan Government to establish innovative and sustainable financing mechanisms such as climate insurance to reduce the impact of recurrent droughts on the economy.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4674", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Vicky Ford"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Chelmsford"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Vicky Ford"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2022-02-16", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2022-02-16T16:48:06.77Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "208"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2022-02-08", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Kenya: Droughts"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what support the Government has provided to Kenya to help tackle the impacts of drought in the last two years.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4131", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Jim Shannon"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Strangford"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Jim Shannon"} ], "uin" : "120757"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1420694", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1420694/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

Child sexual abuse cases are some of the most challenging, complex and sensitive cases. They are dealt with by specially trained prosecutors, working closely with the police to build the strongest possible cases that meet the legal test. In 2020-2021 there were 6,402 prosecutions for cases classified as child abuse. In the same period the conviction rate was 85.6%, an increase of 2.7% on the previous year.

The government has successfully rolled out Section 28 for vulnerable victims and witnesses, including children, in all Crown Courts from November 2020. We know that Section 28 provisions which provide for pre-recorded cross-examination can help to improve the experience of victims by enabling them to give their evidence earlier in the process and outside of the courtroom.

Pakistan has taken many significant steps to tackle abuse, exploitation, trafficking and all forms of violence against and torture of children. The National Child Labour Survey, establishment of Pakistan's first Child Protection Institute, the setting of 18 as a minimum age for domestic employment in the Islamabad Capital Territory, and promulgation of the Zainab Alert, Response and Recovery Act 2019 for the speedy recovery of kidnapped children, are steps in the right direction. However, serious challenges remain. Child labour - common in the textile, agricultural and waste sectors - remains prevalent. The UK also remains concerned about cases of child rape, violence and forced marriage. In order to end these harmful practices, the FCDO-funded Aawaz II programme advocates for legislation on child marriage, and supports Pakistan in its efforts to reform child rights legislation, and to establish child protection referral and case management systems.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4366", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for James Cleverly"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Braintree"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "James Cleverly"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2022-02-15", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2022-02-15T16:58:58.45Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "208"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2022-02-07", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Pakistan: Children"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what recent assessment her Department has made of Pakistan's progress in meeting goal 16.2 of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4131", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Jim Shannon"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Strangford"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Jim Shannon"} ], "uin" : "119571"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1420086", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1420086/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "
