The Government remains concerned about the human rights record of the Government of Eritrea, including on Freedom of Expression. My officials raised the importance of the right to peaceful protest in a meeting with the Eritrean Ambassador in London on 8 November. I am aware of reports that there were deaths and injuries amongst protestors in Asmara on 31 October. Our Embassy in Asmara, along with international partners, are monitoring the situation closely but have been unable to verify reports of deaths. Officials from the Embassy made representations to Eritrean authorities with regards to one British dual-national who was arrested following the protest, who has since been released. The UK welcomed the renewal of the mandate for the Independent Expert on the human rights situation in Sudan at the UN Human Rights Council in September. The resolution that renewed the mandate made clear that any transition of the mandate must be underpinned by an improvement in the human rights situation in Sudan, and the British Government supports this position.<\/p>
Sudan remains a Human Rights Priority Country for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, and improving human rights is a key objective of our engagement with Sudan. DFID tackles malaria through bilateral programmes in countries, research, multilateral funding to the Global Fund and the World Health Organisation, and through activities such as strengthening health systems in endemic countries. DFID is currently the second largest global funder of the effort against malaria and expects to remain a leading global donor in the future.<\/p>
