Every death in custody is a tragedy, and we are committed to reducing the number of self-inflicted deaths and self-harm incidents in prisons. Since 2010 the number of self-harm incidents and self-inflicted deaths by prisoners on remand has fallen significantly. All prisons are required to have procedures in place to identify, manage and support people who are at risk of harm to themselves, and the National Offender Management Service (NOMS) has put in place additional resources to undertake this safer custody work. NOMS has also reviewed case management process for prisoners assessed as being at risk and will be acting on the recommendations in due course.

The national statistics on safety in custody use the following categories: self-harm incidents are defined as “any act where a prisoner deliberately harms themselves irrespective of the method, intent or severity of any injury”; and self-inflicted deaths are defined as “any death of a person who has apparently taken his or her own life, irrespective of intent.” They do not include a separate category of “attempted self-inflicted death”, because the intent of the prisoner is often unknown. Some incidents are more likely to result in a fatality than others, but the point at which a self-harm incident becomes an attempted self-inflicted death is unclear. For this reason, the tables below include the answers to parts (a) and (c) of the question only. It is not possible to provide the proportion of prisoners that self-harm incidents relate to, as more than one incident may be attributed to the same individual. Instead, a rate per 1,000 prisoners has been provided.

Any violence in prison is unacceptable - especially when it is directed at our hardworking staff</del>

We have a zero tolerance approach to violence and work closely with the police on this issue. Those who are violent could face extra time behind bars. Anyone found to have broken prison rules will be stripped of their privileges and could have time added to their sentence</del>

The following tables set out the occasions from 1st January 2015 until 9th December 2015 when the National Tactical Response Group (NTRG) has been called out to public and private sector establishments.</del>

The information does not include aborted callouts.</del>

The budget for the Tradeshow Access Programme was £11.05M in 2014/15 and the estimated spend in 2015/16 is £10.25M.</del>

For 2016/17 and beyond, UKTI will be reviewing how the Tradeshow Access Programme is aligned with other Export Services as part of the Comprehensive Spending Review settlement. It is therefore not possible to confirm the budget at this stage.</del>

I will respond positively to a request for a meeting with the Sponsors Alliance subject to diary commitments.</del>

The Government published an Equality Analysis of the impact of freezing the student loan repayment threshold on 25th November.</ins>

</ins>

All borrowers whose earnings are above the repayment threshold will pay around £6 per week more (in nominal terms) by 2020/21. Those individuals with the lowest lifetime earnings will be affected the least, because they will either never earn above the earnings threshold, or will only do so for a more limited period of the loan’s life.</ins>

The figures provided do not cover the period prior to 1 February 2012 as there was no consolidated reporting of items confiscated from court users prior to the introduction of the Total Facilities Management contract. For the purpose of this answer only full financial years have been provided.

Analysis of the data for 2014/15 captured in the “other category” is currently underway to establish which items are or could be deemed as weapons, as the currently centrally held data represents a “catch all” and therefore may be misleading. I will write to the Hon. Member as soon as possible to provide clarity on that category.</del>

The increase in the number of weapons taken from people as they enter Crown Courts between 2012/13 and 2014/15 may be due to the implementation of more robust training for Court Security Officers; improved rates of recording for the taking of such items and improved searching of people entering Crown Courts.</ins>
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/1496", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Shailesh Vara"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "North West Cambridgeshire"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Mr Shailesh Vara"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2015-12-10", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "true", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "previousAnswerVersion" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/435929/answer/previousversion/34967", "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/1496", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Shailesh Vara"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "North West Cambridgeshire"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Mr Shailesh Vara"} } , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2015-12-10T17:37:58.74Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ], "questionFirstMinisteriallyCorrected" : [{"_value" : "2016-02-25T14:42:36.93Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "54"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Justice"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Justice"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2015-12-07", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Courts: Security"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, how many incidents of confiscation of (a) knives, (b) firearms and (c) other weapons in (i) magistrates' and (ii) Crown courts there were in each year since 2010.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/1516", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Andy Slaughter"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Hammersmith"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Andy Slaughter"} ], "uin" : "18874"} ], "itemsPerPage" : 10, "next" : "http://eldaddp.azurewebsites.net/answeredquestions.text?_page=1&min-answer.questionFirstMinisteriallyCorrected.=2015-10-16T13%3A29%3A49.693Z&max-answer.questionFirstAnswered.=2016-01-05T15%3A36%3A52.917Z", "page" : 0, "startIndex" : 1, "totalResults" : 75, "type" : ["http://purl.org/linked-data/api/vocab#ListEndpoint", "http://purl.org/linked-data/api/vocab#Page"]} }
