As the Justice Secretary has said, the safety and welfare of all those in custody is vital.

Although youth crime is down, reoffending rates are far too high and the care and supervision of young people in custody is not good enough. Restraint should only be used as a last resort, when young people are putting their own safety and the safety of others at risk.

In 2012, we introduced the Minimising and Managing Physical Restraint (MMPR). Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons has welcomed the significant improvements that MMPR has brought.

The number of minor and serious injuries requiring medical treatment resulting from RPIs is published in Chapter 8 of the Youth Justice Annual Statistics:

The number of young people that establishments recorded as injured during incidents that required Restrictive Physical Intervention in each institution in the youth secure estate in each of the last eight years is set out in the attached document. NOMS has implemented a range of measures in recent years to improve the security surrounding prisoners on escort. Between 2010-11 and 2014-15, 23 prisoners escaped from vehicles operated by NOMS or by contractors. All were re-captured. </ins>

Overall, the number of escapes from prison escorts almost halved from 102 between 2005-06 and 2009-10, to 59 between 2010-11 and 2014-15.</ins>

The tables below provide the details requested for each escape and for each year and provide details on the overall number of escapes from escorts outside of a prison over the last 10 years. </ins>

    Any violence in prison is unacceptable - especially when it is directed at our hardworking staff.

    We have a zero tolerance approach to violence and work closely with the police on this issue. Those who are violent could face extra time behind bars. Anyone found to have broken prison rules will be stripped of their privileges and could have time added to their sentence.

    The figures provided do not cover the period prior to 1 February 2012 as there was no consolidated reporting of items confiscated from court users prior to the introduction of the Total Facilities Management contract. For the purpose of this answer only full financial years have been provided.

    Analysis of the data for 2014/15 captured in the “other category” is currently underway to establish which items are or could be deemed as weapons, as the currently centrally held data represents a “catch all” and therefore may be misleading. I will write to the Hon. Member as soon as possible to provide clarity on that category.</del>

    The increase in the number of weapons taken from people as they enter Crown Courts between 2012/13 and 2014/15 may be due to the implementation of more robust training for Court Security Officers; improved rates of recording for the taking of such items and improved searching of people entering Crown Courts.</ins>
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/1496", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Shailesh Vara"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "North West Cambridgeshire"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Mr Shailesh Vara"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2015-12-10", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "true", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "previousAnswerVersion" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/435929/answer/previousversion/34967", "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/1496", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Shailesh Vara"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "North West Cambridgeshire"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Mr Shailesh Vara"} } , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2015-12-10T17:37:58.74Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ], "questionFirstMinisteriallyCorrected" : [{"_value" : "2016-02-25T14:42:36.93Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "54"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Justice"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Justice"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2015-12-07", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Courts: Security"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, how many incidents of confiscation of (a) knives, (b) firearms and (c) other weapons in (i) magistrates' and (ii) Crown courts there were in each year since 2010.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/1516", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Andy Slaughter"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Hammersmith"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Andy Slaughter"} ], "uin" : "18874"} ], "itemsPerPage" : 10, "page" : 0, "startIndex" : 1, "totalResults" : 7, "type" : ["http://purl.org/linked-data/api/vocab#ListEndpoint", "http://purl.org/linked-data/api/vocab#Page"]} }
