The British Library is undertaking a forensic investigation of this incident, with the support of the National Cyber Security Centre and cyber security specialists, and has reported it to the Information Commissioner’s Office. This investigation will help to provide a full picture of what happened, and the extent of disruption caused. This will take time, during which the British Library is liaising closely with the Department for Culture, Media & Sport and others to provide updates.

The British Library has taken targeted protective measures to ensure the integrity of its systems, including the quarantining of hardware, the resetting of passwords for all staff, and the installation of additional monitoring and detection software across its estate.

The central aim of the Government Cyber Security Strategy is to ensure that Government’s critical functions are strengthened against cyber attack by 2025, and that all Government organisations across the public sector are resilient to known vulnerabilities and attack methods by 2030. As the sponsor Department for the British Library, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport will continue to work closely with the Library to enhance its overall cyber resilience and ensure these targets are met.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4728", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Parkinson of Whitley Bay"} } , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Lord Parkinson of Whitley Bay"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2023-12-05", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "groupedQuestionUIN" : {"_value" : "HL512"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2023-12-05T16:04:28.933Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "217"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Culture, Media and Sport"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Culture, Media and Sport"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2023-11-22", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "British Library: Cybersecurity"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "2"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25277", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Lords"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask His Majesty's Government what (1) immediate, and (2) long-term, assistance they are providing to the British Library in the aftermath of the recent ransomware attack, to ensure the recovery of compromised data, and the implementation of measures to enhance the Library's cybersecurity resilience.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/2593", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Freyberg"} } , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Lord Freyberg"} ], "uin" : "HL511"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1465629", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Treasury"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1465629/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

The conflict in Ukraine has affected the global economy. The government is closely monitoring developments and the channels through which they may affect the UK economy, and we remain committed to supporting businesses, people, and jobs.

The high inflation seen recently has largely been caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, as global supply chain disruption has pushed up goods prices, and higher global energy prices. Russia's invasion of Ukraine has added to inflationary pressures and the cost of living- it has already pushed up the prices consumers pay for fuel, some goods and is contributing to higher expected energy prices in the autumn.

We know that millions of households across the UK are struggling to make their incomes stretch to cover the cost of living. That is why the government is providing over £15bn of additional support, as announced by the Chancellor on 26 May 2022. This is in addition to the £22bn announced previously, with government support for the cost of living now totalling over £37bn this year.

More information on government support for the cost of living can be found on the Gov.uk website.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4726", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Baroness Penn"} } , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Baroness Penn"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2022-06-09", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2022-06-09T12:20:17.723Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "14"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Treasury"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Treasury"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2022-05-24", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Cost of Living"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "2"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25277", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Lords"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask Her Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the effect of the conflict in Ukraine on the cost of living in the UK.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/3682", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Truscott"} } , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Lord Truscott"} ], "uin" : "HL511"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1327215", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1327215/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

Throughout the pandemic, DCMS ministers and officials have been regularly engaging with stakeholders representing the workforce across the creative industries to ensure their concerns are understood.

Regular forums for engagement include quarterly meetings with the Creative Industries Council, which includes representatives from across the creative sector and is co-chaired by the Secretaries of State for DCMS and Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. At the outset of the Covid pandemic, the Council developed a plan on transition and recovery that has been useful for helping shape our policy response. We are now looking to the future, and continue to work with the Council to consider further recovery and growth opportunities for the sector.

DCMS officials are also in regular contact with other stakeholders including ScreenSkills, Arts Council England, the Creative Industries Federation and the Creative Industries Policy and Evidence Centre.
