Recovering nature is a priority for this Government, which is why we have set legally binding targets to halt and then reverse the decline in species abundance, reduce the risk of species extinction and restore or create more than 500,000 hectares of wildlife-rich habitats. Action under the Environmental Improvement Plan to deliver our biodiversity targets will address key pressures impacting pollinators including habitat loss, fragmentation and degradation, use of some pesticides, climate change and land use intensification.

Our 2014 National Pollinator Strategy sets out a 10-year plan to help pollinators survive and thrive. It delivers action across four themes: strengthening evidence; restoring habitats and species; sustaining pollinator health; and engaging wider society. A Defra-led working group is considering future priorities for pollinators beyond 2024.

Agri-environment schemes are a key mechanism for recovering bees and other pollinators, in particular through the ‘Wild Pollinator and Farm Wildlife Package’. Between 2014 and 2019, an estimated 30,000ha of bee-friendly habitat was delivered through this scheme.

We have also collaborated with research institutes and volunteer organisations to set up the Pollinator Monitoring and Research Partnership to improve our understanding of pollinators and pollination services, and raised the profile of pollinators through our annual Bees’ Needs Week, which raises awareness of key actions we can all take to protect pollinators. Bees’ Needs Week 2024 will run from 8-14 July.

Defra supports the honey bee population specifically through the work of the National Bee Unit inspectorate, which operates our bee pest surveillance programmes and provides free training and advice to beekeepers, including on pest and disease recognition. While bee health is a devolved matter, Defra and the Welsh Government work together on bee health and, in 2020, we jointly published the Healthy Bees Plan 2030 (copy attached).
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/1547", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Benyon"} } , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Lord Benyon"} , "attachment" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1688760/answer/attachment/1", "fileName" : {"_value" : "Healthy Bees Plan 2030.pdf"} , "title" : "Healthy Bees Plan 2030"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2024-02-15", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2024-02-15T14:27:31.72Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "13"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Environment, Food and Rural Affairs"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Environment, Food and Rural Affairs"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2024-02-09", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Bees: Conservation"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "2"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25277", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Lords"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask His Majesty's Government what action they are taking to support the bee population.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4303", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Baroness Kennedy of Cradley"} } , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Baroness Kennedy of Cradley"} ], "uin" : "HL2361"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1351733", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Transport"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1351733/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

The UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) ensures that the vast majority of journeys will continue as they did before the end of the transition period. EU and UK hauliers are able to operate to, from and through each other’s territories with no restriction, and undertake up to two additional movements within each other’s territories.

With regards to border flow and COVID-19 testing requirements, haulier testing for drivers operating in the EU is now available at 34 Information and Advice Sites across the country which are strategically located, aligned to strategic routes to ports and typical haulier footfall. The Department has tested over 700,000 hauliers for COVID-19 since December 2020 with a positivity rate of 0.1%. The high compliance demonstrates the effectiveness of the COVID testing at Information and Advice Sites as it enables goods to flow freely across borders and delivers robust public health mitigations to manage the risk of infection in England. As of 19th August, only Germany have any testing requirements for hauliers entering from the UK.

The Department will continue to monitor the changing situation and rapidly engage with hauliers if there are any further changes to haulier testing.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4580", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Baroness Vere of Norbiton"} } , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Baroness Vere of Norbiton"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2021-09-01", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "groupedQuestionUIN" : [{"_value" : "HL2359"} , {"_value" : "HL2360"} , {"_value" : "HL2362"} ], "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2021-09-01T15:25:33.82Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "27"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Transport"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Transport"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2021-08-18", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Large Goods Vehicles: Spain"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "2"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25277", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Lords"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask Her Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the ease of HGV vehicle movements from UK ports to northern Spain.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4303", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Baroness Kennedy of Cradley"} } , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Baroness Kennedy of Cradley"} ], "uin" : "HL2361"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1183458", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Foreign and Commonwealth Office"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1183458/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

The Common Travel Area (CTA) is an existing special border-free zone which facilitates the long-standing principle of free movement for British and Irish nationals and the enjoyment of reciprocal rights enjoyed by the respective state’s citizens. It is made up of the UK, Ireland and the Crown Dependencies (Jersey; Guernsey; Isle of Man). There are no routine immigration controls on journeys from within the CTA. To protect this arrangement there is a high level of collaboration between the UK and Ireland to strengthen the external border of the CTA.

The Government is committed to maintaining the CTA once the UK leaves the EU, including the joint work with Ireland aimed at securing the external CTA border and preventing abuse of the arrangement. This will protect the ability to move freely within the UK and between the UK and Ireland, recognising the special importance of this to people in their daily lives, and the underpinning it provides for the Northern Ireland peace process.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4311", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Baroness Williams of Trafford"} } , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Baroness Williams of Trafford"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2017-11-01", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2017-11-01T14:10:59.843Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Home Office"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Home Office"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2017-10-23", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Immigration Controls"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "2"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25277", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Lords"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask Her Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the need to inspect proof of nationality on entry into Britain of people travelling from the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/1854", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Marlesford"} } , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Lord Marlesford"} ], "uin" : "HL2361"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/603965", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department of Health"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/603965/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "
