The Government plans to tackle the challenges patients face when trying to access National Health Service dental care with a rescue plan to provide 700,000 more urgent dental appointments and recruit new dentists to the areas that need them most. To rebuild dentistry in the long term and increase access to NHS dental care, we will reform the dental contract, with a shift to focus on prevention and the retention of NHS dentists.

From 1 April 2023, the responsibility for commissioning primary care dentistry to meet the needs of the local population has been delegated to all integrated care boards across England.

NHS dentists are required to keep their NHS.UK profiles up to date so that patients can find a dentist more easily. This includes information on whether they are accepting new patients. In circumstances where patients are unable to access an urgent dental appointment directly through an NHS dental practice, they should contact NHS 111.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4359", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Stephen Kinnock"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Aberafan Maesteg"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Stephen Kinnock"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2024-07-30", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2024-07-30T10:41:10.887Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "17"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Health and Social Care"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Health and Social Care"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2024-07-22", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Dental Services: Newcastle-under-Lyme"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what steps he plans to take to help improve access to NHS dentistry in Newcastle-under-Lyme constituency.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/5168", "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Newcastle-under-Lyme"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Adam Jogee"} ], "uin" : "1086"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1669103", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Ministry of Justice"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1669103/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

We recognise the challenges the sector is currently experiencing in recruiting and retaining social care workers, which has been exacerbated by the pandemic and wider labour market dynamics yet Immigration should not be seen as the go to solution to these issues, rather than addressing wider issues in the sector. To support local authorities and care providers address workforce pressures, the Government announced in our recent People at the Heart of Care White Paper we would invest at least £500 million to develop and support the workforce over the next three years, which we believe will boost the sector’s ability to recruit and retain staff, as well as improve the recognition of our vital adult social care workforce.

The Government also put in place additional measures to support the sector last winter providing an additional £462.5m to boost recruitment and support existing care work through the winter until March 2022.

In addition, the introduction of the Health and Care visa in August 2020 made it quicker and cheaper for regulated health and care professionals to secure their visa to work in the Health and Care sector. A number of Health and Care occupations – such as care workers, senior care workers, nurses and auxiliary nurses and assistants – feature on the Shortage Occupation List (SOL).

On 27 April 2022 the independent Migration Advisory Committee published its report into the impacts of the ending of free movement on the adult social care sector. The MAC made a number of recommendations, spanning pay & conditions, workforce strategy and immigration policy. The government recognises that the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to be extremely challenging for businesses, including in the bingo sector. In recognition of the impact of requiring some businesses to remain closed for a longer period, an enhanced package of support was introduced, including Restart Grants of up to £18,000 per premises, specifically for those which were required to remain closed beyond Step 2. The package also included extensions to the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme and Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme, with further discretionary funding for allocation by Local Authorities. Bingo clubs have accessed £44m of government support via the Coronavirus Jobs Retention Scheme (£26.8m), Eat Out to Help Out (£600k), Business Rates Relief (£15.9m) and Grant funding (£1.6m). We are continuing to work with organisations in the land-based gambling sector to understand the impacts and how we may be able to support them.

Sitting days are kept under close review to ensure changes in demand are met by the court system. In November, we allocated an extra 700 days to the Crown Court for this financial year in response to an increase in the number of cases coming to court.

Sitting days are monitored and assigned based on the number of cases we expect the courts to receive annually. This approach has enabled us to reduce the number of outstanding cases in the Crown Court in England and Wales by almost 40% since 2014.

There is no specific offence of voter ID fraud. Cases are usually prosecuted as offences involving fraud by false representation as well as offences involving impersonation.

It is not possible to ascertain if an offender was convicted specifically for voter ID fraud as this information is not centrally held in the court proceedings database. As a result, identifying the number of offenders convicted for voter ID fraud from court data would require a manual search of court records, which would be of disproportionate cost.

The Neighbourhood Planning Act 2017 introduced a duty on the Secretary of State to issue further guidance on the provision of accessible housing to meet the needs of older and disabled people. This will help local authorities to determine when to apply the higher access standards available in Building Regulations optional requirements for accessible and adaptable homes, which is based on Lifetime Homes. This will help meet the needs of those groups identified in the Joseph Rowntree Foundation report.

Accessible housing registers can be useful and we are aware that some councils and social landlords have incorporated such an approach within their lettings scheme.

We are legislating in the Childcare Bill to provide all three- and four-year-olds of working parents with 30 hours of free childcare. We have already worked to increase the supply of childcare by making available £2 million in start-up grants for people wishing to set up childcare businesses, supporting more schools to provide places, and establishing Childminder Agencies. The expansion of the entitlement provides a further opportunity for existing childcare providers to expand and for new providers to enter the market.

As set out in our Press Notice of 1 June 2015, we have committed to increase the average childcare funding rates paid to providers. In order to inform this and establish the right balance between being fair to providers and delivering value for money to the taxpayer, we will start a review of funding for the entitlement before the summer.
