The Government does not believe the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) will bring us closer to a world without nuclear weapons. The UK will not sign or engage with the Treaty. The Government firmly believes that the best way to achieve our collective goal of a world without nuclear weapons is through gradual multilateral disarmament negotiated using a step-by-step approach, under the framework of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).<\/p>
The effects and consequences of nuclear testing are not part of the NPT. The Treaty related to the cessation of nuclear testing is the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). The UK has had a moratorium on nuclear testing since 1991, and was one of the first to sign and ratify the CTBT in 1998. As planned, HS2 trains will run directly to Scotland via a connection to the West Coast Main Line south of Preston, reducing journey times and improving reliability for rail services between England and Scotland.<\/p>

The Department for Transport has been working with Transport Scotland, HS2 Ltd and Network Rail to identify further options for improvements to cross-border routes, which could further reduce journey times, ease congestion, and create jobs, investment opportunities, and environmental and economic benefits for the whole of Scotland.<\/p>

For North Wales, the plans would see passengers benefitting from an HS2 interchange at Crewe, with shorter journey times to London, Birmingham, the towns and cities of the Midlands and the Thames Valley area via Old Oak Common and elsewhere.<\/p>

In August 2019 the Prime Minister asked Doug Oakervee to chair an independent review of HS2 to provide advice on how and whether to proceed. The Government will set out the next steps for High Speed 2 in due course.<\/p>

In countries with live conflicts such as Iraq, Syria and Yemen it is especially difficult for DFID to operate and monitor delivery. In these countries, DFID finances partners that have experience of delivering successfully and in conformity with international humanitarian principles in conflict environments. In addition, in Syria and Yemen (where HMG staff are unable to travel), we have contracted independent monitoring agencies to provide objective evidence of programme delivery.<\/p>
DFID's results in the Middle East include helping 3.6 million people in Syria to sustainably access clean water and sanitation and 182 thousand children in Syria to gain a decent education. In Iraq DFID has helped 42,000 people access emergency life-saving medical care and provided safe drinking water for more than 200,000 people. In Yemen 1.1 million women, adolescent girls and children under five have been reached through nutrition related interventions.<\/p>

According to the UN, 85,000 people have been displaced from Fallujah and the surrounding area since May. The UK is concerned by the humanitarian situation in the Fallujah area, including overcrowded camps and the risks posed by the extreme heat of the Iraqi summer.<\/p>
The UK is working closely with UN, government and other partners to ensure that humanitarian assistance reaches people who have fled Fallujah. We call on all sides to the conflict to respect International Humanitarian Law and to ensure free, unimpeded access for humanitarian agencies.<\/p>
Since June 2014, the UK has committed £79.5 million in humanitarian assistance to the crisis in Iraq.
