The Government is taking forward a programme of reform to alternative provision (AP), including pupil referral units, and set out its vision for reform in the March 2018 document: 'Creating opportunity for all: our vision for alternative provision'. Since then the Government has made significant progress by launching a £4 million AP Innovation Fund, which is developing best practice and delivering projects to improve outcomes for pupils in AP, by publishing two research reports into AP with examples of good practice for providers and commissioners, and by opening 6 AP free schools and approving two more.

In response to the Timpson Review of school exclusion, the Government committed to setting out plans to go further to improve outcomes for children in AP, including how to support alternative providers to attract and develop high-quality staff through a new AP workforce programme, and how it will help commissioners and providers to identify and recognise good practice.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/111", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Nick Gibb"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Bognor Regis and Littlehampton"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Nick Gibb"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2019-05-20", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2019-05-20T14:11:55.833Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "60"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Education"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Education"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2019-05-14", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Pupil Referral Units: Standards"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Education, what steps he is taking to improve the quality of education in pupil referral units.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4638", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Mr Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Slough"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Mr Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi"} ], "uin" : "254263"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1126465", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Transport"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1126465/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

The Government has invested £1.2bn through the Housing Infrastructure Fund (HIF) to support housing and further announcements through this £5.5bn fund are expected later this year. A significant number of HIF bids include transport infrastructure. The Government is also investing in transport supporting new homes through the Transforming Cities Fund, Major Road Network, and projects in the Oxford-Cambridge Arc.

The Government is further promoting integrated housing and transport planning, for example through the revised National Planning Policy Framework.

In the Cancer Workforce Plan for England published in December 2017, Health Education England set out the case for additional training support for clinical radiology. The table below shows the increase in accepted post numbers, by recruitment year. Fill rates for clinical radiology in England over the last seven years have always been 100%. Clinical radiology is a popular speciality and each year has on average double the number of appointable candidates for the number of entry points (offers of places to commence the training programme).

Mental health is a priority for this Government. That is why the Department of Health and Social Care is continuing to work closely with the Department for Education to improve the mental health of university students.

To support this, the NHS Long Term Plan commits to a comprehensive expansion of mental health services, including a new approach to mental health services for people aged 18-25, supporting transitions to college and to adulthood, with services being adapted to create a comprehensive offer for 0 to 25 year olds.

NHS England is working closely with Universities UK through the Mental Health in Higher Education programme to build the capability and capacity of universities to improve student welfare services and improve access to mental health services for the student population, including focusing on suicide reduction, and improving access to psychological therapies to support and treat students suffering from stress and anxiety.

The Government has planted 15 million trees since 2010, and remains committed to planting 11 million trees in this Parliament, 2017-22. Woodland creation is a key activity of our 25 Year Environment Plan.

The Forestry Commission routinely publishes statistics on planting rates as part of its Corporate Performance Indicators. The latest figures show that from April 2017 to end March 2019 at least 3.2 million trees have been planted, equivalent to approximately 2,083 hectares of woodland creation.

The Government’s support for this woodland creation has predominantly been from the Countryside Stewardship scheme. Further Government support has been through the Environment Agency and National Forest Company.

In the Autumn Budget the Government announced an additional £60 million for tree planting initiatives, comprising £10 million to fund urban tree planting and £50 million for a Woodland Carbon Guarantee scheme.
