The British House in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil during the 2016 Olympics and Paralympics was a unique partnership between the British Olympic Association, the British Paralympic Association, the Mayor of London and the UK Government’s GREAT Britain campaign. The total budget for British House during the Olympics was £3.8m and for the Paralympics £1.2m with each partner contributing financially towards the cost of delivery. Sponsorship, gifted mainly through value-in-kind with a wide range of companies also contributed to reducing certain budget items. Project costs are currently being finalised and details of expenditure will be published on www.gov.uk in accordance with government commitments on transparency in procurement.

British House was a unique platform which showcased the best of London and the UK from its culture, sporting prowess, business expertise and investment opportunities to an international audience at the world’s biggest sporting event, building on the success of London 2012. All partners involved in British House worked together to provide a home away from home for Team GB and ParaGB athletes, their friends and families to celebrate their sporting performance. Over time, we expect British House to contribute to the GREAT Britain campaign by not only enhancing the perception of the UK but by increasing levels of trade, investment, tourism and international students to the UK.

Each partner is currently evaluating their own contribution to British House. The Department for International Trade is analysing feedback that was collected from guests when the House was open and post-event and will make available its report publicly.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4074", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Mark Garnier"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Wyre Forest"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Mark Garnier"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2016-10-31", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2016-10-31T17:03:28.557Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "202"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "International Trade"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "International Trade"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2016-10-26", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Trade Promotion"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for International Trade, what the cost to the public purse was of the UKTI British House project in Rio; what the aims of that project were; and what steps his Department has taken to assess its effectiveness towards those aims.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/301", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Richard Burden"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Birmingham, Northfield"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Richard Burden"} ], "uin" : "50357"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/621073", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for International Trade"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/621073/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

Firstly, the Department for International Trade is focusing resources in those markets and sectors (not just countries) that can add the most value, based on our forecasting. We have identified a number of these markets; three quarters of which are outside of the EU. These delivery plans provide export promotion support in high priority areas, and will focus Government efforts to encourage foreign buyers to buy British. They range from pursuing rail opportunities in Southern Africa to healthcare in China; from food & drink in Australia to airports in Mexico.

Secondly, our department has inherited the GREAT Britain campaign, which showcases the best of what the UK has to offer to inspire the world and encourage people to visit, do business, invest and study in the UK. This campaign unites the efforts of the public and private sector to help generate jobs and growth for Britain. The campaign has already secured confirmed economic returns of £1.9bn for the UK. It can now be seen in 144 countries worldwide and nearly 300 cities.

The programme is designed to enable UK small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to take advantage of the global appetite for UK products, skills and expertise in markets around the world.

Thirdly, in order to help promote economic growth in developing countries the government has created a new cross-Whitehall Prosperity Fund worth £1.3 billion over the next 5 years. Its priorities include improving the business climate, competitiveness and operation of markets, energy and financial sector reform, and increasing the ability of governments to tackle corruption. These reforms will drive sustainable development in developing countries, and create opportunities for UK companies.

Fourthly, UK Export Finance provides a diverse range of products to ensure that no viable UK export fails for want of finance or insurance from the private sector. They have provided a total of £15bn of support over the last 5 years. These products ensure that finance is not an obstacle to British businesses being awarded contracts in markets across the world.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4074", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Mark Garnier"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Wyre Forest"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Mark Garnier"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2016-10-28", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2016-10-28T13:55:35.54Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "202"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "International Trade"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "International Trade"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2016-10-25", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Trade Promotion"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for International Trade, what steps his Department is taking to increase demand for British services and manufactured goods in non-EU unsaturated markets abroad.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/474", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Mr Nigel Evans"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Ribble Valley"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Mr Nigel Evans"} ], "uin" : "50217"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/598470", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for International Trade"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/598470/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

We recognise that better provision of defibrillators and increasing the number of people trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation could help save more lives of those who have a cardiac arrest outside a hospital setting.

That is why the Chancellor announced in the budget in March 2016 that the Government is making available another £1 million to make public access defibrillators and coronary pulmonary resuscitation training more widely available in communities across England. This builds on last year’s funding of £1 million, which provided almost 700 more publicly accessible defibrillators in communities across England and increased the numbers of people trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Details on how this second tranche of the funding can be accessed will be available in due course.

The Department for Education (DfE) is encouraging schools to purchase automated external defibrillators (AEDs) as part of their first aid equipment and in November 2014 announced new arrangements to allow schools to purchase AEDs at a competitive price. This is the result of a unique agreement between the DfE and the Department of Health in which devices are bought in bulk and the savings of around 50% are passed on to schools. Since the launch of this policy, 1,389 defibrillators have been provided to schools.

To help schools in considering whether to purchase a defibrillator, DfE has published advice on installing and maintaining AEDs on school premises. This has been developed drawing on the expertise of National Health Service ambulance services and voluntary and community sector organisations.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/127", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Prior of Brampton"} } , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Lord Prior of Brampton"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2016-06-15", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2016-06-15T12:22:50.857Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "17"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Health"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Health"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2016-06-08", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Trade Promotion"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "2"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25277", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Lords"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask Her Majesty’s Government what is their policy on providing defibrillators in public places and schools.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4238", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Storey"} } , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Lord Storey"} ], "uin" : "HL552"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/517806", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Business, Innovation and Skills"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/517806/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

Increasing exports, to all overseas markets, is a key factor in the Government’s long-term economic plan. Government departments are working together to support UK businesses looking to take advantage of overseas opportunities and to create a strong business environment that allows them to flourish both at home and overseas. A key part of this work is to identify export opportunities, many of which are based around the needs of high-growth and emerging markets.

This effort to drive economic growth is supported in part by the Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy Programme, a group of appointed parliamentarians drawn from across the political spectrum. Envoys are carefully selected for their experience, skills and knowledge of particular sectors or markets, or their knowledge of business in an effort to identify substantial trade and investment opportunities. There are now 24 Trade Envoys covering 50 high-growth and emerging markets.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/3938", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Anna Soubry"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Broxtowe"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Anna Soubry"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2016-02-25", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2016-02-25T17:31:16.143Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "26"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Business, Innovation and Skills"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Business, Innovation and Skills"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2016-02-08", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Trade Promotion"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, what steps he is taking to promote trade opportunities for UK businesses in high-growth markets.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4410", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Julian Knight"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Solihull"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Julian Knight"} ], "uin" : "26214"} ], "itemsPerPage" : 10, "next" : "http://eldaddp.azurewebsites.net/answeredquestions.text?_page=1&max-date=2019-06-10&hansardHeading=Trade+Promotion&max-answer.questionFirstAnswered.=2016-10-31T17%3A03%3A28.557Z", "page" : 0, "startIndex" : 1, "totalResults" : 22, "type" : ["http://purl.org/linked-data/api/vocab#ListEndpoint", "http://purl.org/linked-data/api/vocab#Page"]} }
