The aim of these campaigns was to achieve universal coverage of LLINs in Sierra Leone as the most effective means of preventing malaria. A rapid assessment following the 2014 distribution campaign found that 81% of households visited nationwide were using at least one mosquito net, up from 37% in 2008. However, an evaluation designed to assess the longer term effectiveness of the campaign has been postponed due to the Ebola crisis. In addition, the Global Fund has provided a further 600,000 nets.<\/p><p> <\/p>"}

The scale of the crisis demands a coordinated, multi-departmental response by the UK Government.<\/p><p> <\/p><p> <\/p><p> <\/p><p>On the 17<sup>th<\/sup> of September, we pledged £100 million in support towards combatting the outbreak. At the heart of this is the provision of 700 treatment beds in Sierra Leone to help to save lives and contain the spread of Ebola. This will increase the number of available beds to more than 1,000 over the coming months. Work has already begun on a 92 bed treatment facility in Kerrytown which will provide 12 dedicated beds specifically for healthcare workers. The MoD will set up, build and operate this facility.<\/p><p> <\/p><p> <\/p><p> <\/p><p>Given the gravity of the situation in Sierra Leone DFID, together with the MoD, is setting up a forward command and control logistical hub that will provide the backbone of infrastructure, commodities, training and management needed to scale up the response in Sierra Leone. The hub will be staffed by a large multi-agency team including military, humanitarian and health experts. It will work closely with international partners and with the Government of Sierra Leone.<\/p><p> <\/p>"}

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office works through our Embassies and High Commissions, and through international organisations, including the Commonwealth, the EU and the UN, to promote tolerance and non-discrimination against LGBT people and to address discriminatory laws, in particular those that criminalise homosexuality. <br> <br>The UK has been a member of the LGBT core group in Geneva since 2011, playing a key role in passing the UN\u2019s first ever resolution on LGBT rights and recently joined its counterpart group in New York.<\/p><p>Within the Commonwealth we continue to encourage the Secretariat and the Secretary-General to do more to promote the rights of its LGBT people. The former Foreign Secretary, my Rt hon friend the Member for Richmond, Yorks (William Hague), wrote to the Commonwealth Secretary-General in March urging him to take concrete action to address this issue within the Commonwealth.<\/p>"}
