The Department has not made an estimate of the number of train tickets sold for cancelled trains.

If a train is cancelled passengers can get a full refund, including for Advance tickets, if they decide not to travel, and passengers are able to use their train ticket on the next available train operated by that train operating company (TOC). During times of disruption operators often allow passengers to use their tickets on services operated by other TOCs, but these agreements are managed locally.

Many DfT-contracted TOCs have put in place systems whereby passengers who have purchased through their websites are notified if the train they have booked has been cancelled. Third party retailers will operate their own alert systems for their customers. The Department continues to work with industry to improve communication with passengers during times of disruption.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4442", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Huw Merriman"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Bexhill and Battle"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Huw Merriman"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2023-01-27", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "groupedQuestionUIN" : [{"_value" : "128681"} , {"_value" : "128682"} ], "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2023-01-27T08:09:48.167Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "27"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Transport"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Transport"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2023-01-20", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Railways: Tickets"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what estimate he has made of the number of train tickets sold for cancelled trains in the last six (a) months and (b) years for which data is available; and what steps he is taking to ensure that those tickets are refunded.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4471", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Rachael Maskell"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "York Central"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Rachael Maskell"} ], "uin" : "128680"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1535543", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Transport"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1535543/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

We have been clear in the Plan for Rail we want to simplify the current mass of complicated fares and tickets, whilst protecting affordable turn up and go tickets and season tickets.

We continue to develop trials to facilitate the ambition for simpler fares, including single leg pricing, to deliver better value and flexibility for passengers. We launched a trial of single leg pricing on a number of LNER routes in 2020 and this fare structure is still in operation on those routes.

The Government has committed to expanding PAYG in the Southeast through extending the Transport for London (TfL) contactless system. This will significantly increase the number of passengers who will be able to travel using contactless ticketing between national rail and TfL modes. Further integration of these systems with National Rail will be a matter for TfL and Great British Railways.

Last year’s spending review set aside £360 million investment to modernise industry ticketing and retailing systems. We also announced alongside the Integrated Rail Plan, an expansion of pay-as-you-go travel on rail to more than 700 stations in urban areas across the country including more than 400 in the north. This is in addition to our manifesto commitment to extend PAYG to more than 200 stations in the South East.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4358", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Wendy Morton"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Aldridge-Brownhills"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Wendy Morton"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2022-06-15", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2022-06-15T10:38:52.04Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "27"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Transport"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Transport"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2022-06-07", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Railways: Tickets"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, how his Department plans to integrate Transport for London's single ticketing infrastructure with that of Great British Railways.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4471", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Rachael Maskell"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "York Central"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Rachael Maskell"} ], "uin" : "13768"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1455932", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Transport"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1455932/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

The Williams-Shapps Plan for Rail proposes the biggest shake-up of rail in a generation. This includes the creation of a new public body, Great British Railways (GBR), which will run the network in the public interest. GBR will use its leadership role to simplify the current mass of complicated fares and tickets.

We will continue to push forward with trials to facilitate the ambition of the Williams-Shapps Plan for Rail for simpler fares, including single leg pricing, which allows for better value and flexibility for consumers. A trial on single leg pricing on LNER commenced in January 2020 and an update will be provided in due course.

Great British Railways will also explore including other transport modes in its website and app to support seamless journeys.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4358", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Wendy Morton"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Aldridge-Brownhills"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Wendy Morton"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2022-04-19", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2022-04-19T10:28:18.937Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "27"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Transport"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Transport"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2022-03-30", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Railways: Tickets"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what progress has been made on single ticketing regardless of rail operator; and what steps he has taken to advance intermodal single ticketing, including to e-bikes and e-scooters.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4471", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Rachael Maskell"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "York Central"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Rachael Maskell"} ], "uin" : "150224"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1333974", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Transport"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1333974/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "
