Many local authorities have made good progress in implementing their local discretionary schemes and have published the details of their eligibility criteria. Further to the Written Ministerial Statement I made on the 14 September on the progress of the Business Rates relief schemes announced at the Budget, I wrote to authorities encouraging them to speed up implementation. My Department will publish a list of authorities which have rebilled, shortly.<\/p>"}

The Government is committed to working closely with local government to meet the Government\u2019s commitment to continue to give local government greater control over the money they raise. A joint steering group and a series of joint working groups were established with the Local Government Association in 2016 as one way, but not the only way, through which the Government could work with the local government sector on developing proposals for business rates retention. The different working groups meet on different frequencies depending on the work they are undertaking at any particular time . The Government will take a decision on how best to continue to engage the Local Government Association, the steering and working groups and the sector more generally as part of its future plans.<\/p>"}

Commercial properties are currently revalued every 5 years for business rates. At Budget 2016 the Government set an aim to increase the frequency of revaluation.<\/p>
The Government put in place a £3.6 billion package of transitional relief to help businesses facing an increase in business rates and at the Budget 2017 set out a further package to support businesses that may have difficulty paying business rates, including a £1000 discount for eligible pubs with a rateable value of less than £100,000. Additionally, £110 million has been available to assist those ratepayers losing small business rates relief or rural rate relief as a result of revaluation, as well as a £300 million discretionary relief fund over the next four years to enable local authorities to help their local businesses.<\/p>"}

In April the Government confirmed how much each local authority would receive under the £300 million discretionary relief fund. It is now for local authorities to design and implement their own local schemes and to ensure that support for their local business goes where it is needed.<\/p>
The Government has been clear that it expects local authorities to make rapid progress in finalising their schemes, identifying eligible businesses and adjusting bills to provide this support, as soon as possible.<\/p>"}
