Public Health England is planning to spend £1,300,000 on a flu vaccination campaign to encourage eligible members of the public and health and social care workers to take up the free vaccine ahead of the winter season. The spend includes expenditure for advertising on television, radio, national and regional press, outdoor, digital, and printing, excluding VAT. Figures provided are provisional and need to be reconciled following the campaign’s conclusion in November.

Flu vaccines for people aged 18 years and older are procured directly from manufacturers and suppliers by providers, based on their local assessment of need. The procurement and distribution of flu vaccines for the children’s aspect of the national flu programme is managed by Public Health England (PHE). Doses of flu vaccine for 2019/20 is estimated using end of season for 2018/19 that are published on GOV.UK at the following links:

Cumulative influenza vaccine uptake is collected and evaluated by Public Health England (PHE) nationally and locally. The 2018 to 2019 season included the extension of the childhood programme to all those aged nine rising to 10 years old as well as the phased delivery of the newly licensed adjuvanted vaccine for those aged 65 and over.

The national school-age vaccination programme achieved the highest levels of vaccine uptake since it started (60.8%, 2,461,563/4,051,698 in 2018/19, compared to 59.5% in 2017/18 1,998,538/3,360,997). Vaccine uptake for the pre-school children’s influenza vaccine programme has also increased further compared to previous seasons. The following table shows uptake figures for 2018/19 and 2017/18.

Uptake in adult target groups was similar or slightly lower compared to recent seasons and further work is needed to identify underpinning reasons so that uptake can be improved.

Provisional data for flu season 2018-19 (autumn to spring) shows that flu vaccine uptake in those aged 65 and over is at similar levels to previous years and close to the World Health Organization target of 75%.

Vaccine uptake in the children’s programme is at the highest level since the introduction of the programme for two and three-year olds vaccinated in general practice and for children offered the vaccine in primary school.

For pregnant women and for those in at risk groups eligible for flu vaccine, the vaccination uptake is slightly lower compared to last year. There are many reasons for this. Many patients do not appreciate how serious flu can be and the importance of protecting themselves.

Public Health England (PHE) provides influenza vaccines centrally for the children’s influenza programme. Centrally purchased influenza vaccines are carefully monitored by PHE to ensure there is equitable distribution across England and sufficient in-date vaccine for patients who present throughout the season.

General practitioners and other providers are directly responsible for the influenza vaccine supplies used to deliver the national influenza programme to the other eligible groups. This winter, eligible adults aged 18-64 were offered a quadrivalent influenza vaccine, and those aged 65 and over were offered a newly licensed adjuvanted trivalent influenza vaccine (aTIV). There were a number of short-term localised shortages of both vaccines reported, particularly for aTIV due to staggered deliveries from the manufacturer between September and November. The NHS managed these shortages locally, but some patients had to wait longer than usual to be vaccinated. However, there was no overall shortage of either vaccine.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4067", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Steve Brine"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Winchester"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Steve Brine"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2019-02-06", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2019-02-06T14:59:51.157Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "17"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Health and Social Care"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Health and Social Care"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2019-01-29", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Influenza: Vaccination"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what assessment his Department has made of trends in the level of availability of the 2018-19 seasonal flu vaccine.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4433", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Thangam Debbonaire"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Bristol West"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Thangam Debbonaire"} ], "uin" : "214044"} ], "itemsPerPage" : 10, "next" : "http://eldaddp.azurewebsites.net/answeredquestions.text?_page=1&hansardHeading=Influenza%3A+Vaccination&max-answer.dateOfAnswer=2019-07-18", "page" : 0, "startIndex" : 1, "totalResults" : 105, "type" : ["http://purl.org/linked-data/api/vocab#ListEndpoint", "http://purl.org/linked-data/api/vocab#Page"]} }
