This sets out what the UK is doing to prepare for the effects of climate change at home, and support those facing impacts overseas. Aims include to increase the visibility and profile of adaptation and its balance with mitigation and enhance learning and understanding of adaptation needs and actions. The UK government provided a short update in October 2021, to signal its ongoing commitment to transparency on the adaptation action we are taking.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>The third National Adaptation Programme (NAP3), published in July 2023, addresses all 61 risks and opportunities identified in the third Climate Change Risk Assessment. NAP3 includes dedicated responses to risks to domestic agricultural productivity and UK food availability, safety, and quality from climate change overseas. This publication marks a step-change in the UK government's approach to climate adaptation. We\u2019re responding to threats to domestic food production through our Environmental Land Management farming schemes, better protecting hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses with a record-breaking £5.2 billion investment in flood and coastal schemes, and safeguarding future water supplies by working with regulators to accelerate £2.2 billion of investment through our ambitious Plan for Water.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>Adapting to this changing climate is vital to strengthen our national security and resilience and to protect the economy from higher costs in the future. We are working with the Met Office Hadley Centre and others to develop R&amp;D which will help enhance the resilience of the agri-food system in response to climate change.<\/p>"}

To meet this target, the Government has set five-yearly carbon budgets which restrict the amount of greenhouse gas the UK can legally emit in a five year period. The UK met the first two carbon budgets and is on course to meet the third (2018 \u2013 2022). The Net Zero Strategy sets out clear policies and proposals for keeping us on track for our coming carbon budgets (4/5/6), our ambitious Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), and sets out our vision for a decarbonised economy in 2050.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>The Government has a statutory obligation to assess the risks that climate change poses to the country and develop plans and policies to address those risks. The Climate Change Committee\u2019s Independent Assessment of UK Climate Risk offers a detailed insight into the risks and opportunities the UK faces from climate change. These include risks of drought, flooding, extreme heat, average temperature increase and pests, diseases and invasive species to terrestrial and freshwater habitats, peat and soil health, natural carbon stores and sequestration, and agriculture. This evidence\u202finformed our <a href=\"https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/uk-climate-change-risk-assessment-2022\" target=\"_blank\">third UK Climate Change Risk Assessment (CCRA3)<\/a>, which we laid in Parliament on 17 January 2022. The third National Adaptation Programme, responding to the risks in CCRA3, is due to be published next year.<\/p>"}
