On 10 May 2023, I commissioned the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) to conduct an updated harms assessment of synthetic cathinones, currently class B, including those sold under the street name \u2018monkey dust\u2019. I have asked that this assessment includes consideration of whether certain synthetic cathinones are significantly more harmful than others and may therefore merit a separate approach in terms of classification.<\/p>
The Government has a statutory duty to consult the ACMD prior to making any changes to classification under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. Once their report is published, I will carefully consider the ACMD\u2019s expert advice to inform the Government\u2019s decision on how best to tackle misuse of these drugs, including the appropriate classification.<\/p>"}

The Department of funds research through the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and the NIHR welcomes funding applications for research into any aspect of human health, including recreational drugs, it is not usual practice to ring-fence funds for particular topics or conditions. In September 2022, the Department and the Joint Combating Drugs Unit, in partnership with NIHR, launched a £5 million innovation fund to reduce demand for illicit substances. The fund will be run in three phases, phase one will focus on the development of potential interventions, phase two on testing and evaluation of these interventions, and phase three on scale up of interventions that are evaluated as effective in phase two.<\/p>
On 8 March 2023 the Department announced £734,000 funding to support five projects through phase one.<\/p>"}
