The Government is delivering a range of action to prevent violent crime including action to tackle knife crime and gang related violence and exploitation.

Our work to tackle knife crime includes early intervention and prevention work with key partners such as the charity Redthread who intervene with young people in hospital at the ‘teachable moment’. We have awarded £765,000 from a new anti-knife crime community fund launched in October 2017 to support local communities to tackle knife crime. 47 different projects have been supported through the community fund, and the projects awarded funding were particularly aimed at helping young people.

We are also supporting the Operation Sceptre national week of action by police forces to tackle knife crime which is taking place in February. Police forces will be undertaking weapon sweeps, targeted stop and search operations, undertaking test purchasing, encouraging the use of surrender bins, and carrying out educational activities with young people.

Through the Ending Gang Violence and Exploitation (EGVE) programme the Home Office is providing match funding for local area and strategic reviews in areas experiencing gang related issues and challenges to test and build local resilience towards tackling these types of criminal activity, especially county lines. 13 local areas were reviewed in 2016/17 and a further 15 areas are benefiting from these reviews in 2017/18. This supports our wider work to tackle county lines and especially preventing young people becoming offenders or victims through county lines drugs dealing with its associated violence and exploitation. The new Drugs Dealing Telecommunications Restriction Orders (DDTROs) introduced in December will also help tackle county lines drugs dealing.

We have provided funding for 12 Young People’s Advocates to work directly with gang-affected women and girls. We have also provided funding in 2017/18 of over £280,000 to 16 local EGVE projects, including projects delivering gang, knife and county lines awareness training for young people, practitioners and foster carers, community sports and arts projects and mentoring programmes.

An action plan to tackle the use of acid and other corrosives in violent attacks was announced by the Home Secretary in July 2017. This included actions to improve the policing response and also the introduction of a voluntary set of commitments for retailers to not sell certain particularly harmful corrosive substances to under 18s. The agreement with retailers was introduced earlier this month.

The Government will be publishing a Serious Violence Strategy shortly.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4399", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Victoria Atkins"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Louth and Horncastle"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Victoria Atkins"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2018-01-25", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2018-01-25T16:50:07.623Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Home Office"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Home Office"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2018-01-22", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Crimes of Violence: Young People"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what steps her Department is taking to prevent young people committing violent crimes.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4658", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Alex Sobel"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Leeds North West"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Alex Sobel"} ], "uin" : "124106"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/533047", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Business, Innovation and Skills"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/533047/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

The main streams of funds available to UK universities and research bodies are Horizon 2020, Erasmus Plus and aspects of the European Structural and Investment Funds.

Under Horizon 2020, the current Framework Programme, the UK has been awarded €1.84bn to date[1] (excluding the Euratom nuclear research and training programme).

In 2014, the first year of the Erasmus Plus Programme, the UK obtained €79.08 million for mobility grants to 36,734 people from all educational sectors to study, train and volunteer abroad. A further €30.66m was obtained for cooperation projects[2].

The UK’s strategy[3] for its 2014-2020 allocations from the European Structural and Investment Funds sets out that €1.6bn was earmarked for the theme of research, technological development and innovation.

As the Prime Minister has made clear, while the UK remains a member of the EU, current EU funding arrangements continue unchanged, including those that apply to students, researchers, and businesses. It will be for the Government under the new Prime Minister to begin the negotiation to leave, and set out arrangements for those currently in receipt of EU funds.

The UK economy is fundamentally strong and our research and innovation are world leading. The Government intends to maintain and enhance the strength of our research base.

The Ending Gang and Youth Violence programme, of which the peer review network was a part of, was introduced in 2012.

By year, the EGYV programme budget was:

    • 2012/13 £734,000

    • 2013/14 £700,000

This Government is committed to reducing youth violence. On 13 January 2016 the Home Office published the new Ending Gang Violence and Exploitation approach. This has a twin focus concerned with both reducing violence and protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation by gangs, and how the Home Office want to work with national and local partners to respond to this.

The Home Office's Modern Crime Prevention Strategy, published on 23 March 2016, sets out a range of measures they are taking, including working with the police and industry to ensure there are effective controls on the sales of knives, particularly to under-18s. The Home Office has agreed a set of principles with major retailers and the British Retail Consortium to prevent the underage sale of knives and to ensure knives are displayed safely.

Government is also supporting police action taken against knife crime. Most recently, in February 2016, the Home Office supported thirteen police forces who undertook coordinated action against knife crime. This involved targeting habitual knife carriers, weapon sweeps, test purchases of knives from identified retailers, and use of surrender bins.
