The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy did not directly procure any steel, from the UK or overseas, in this period for major projects.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>We will continue to work closely with departments and their arm\u2019s-length bodies to improve awareness of the steel procurement guidance and the quality of the information\u202fthat they are able to provide us on\u202fthe steel procured for their major projects.<\/p><p> <\/p><p>In publishing this data and the annual Steel Pipeline, we are supporting the industry to maximise its potential for growth, enabling steel businesses to plan for future demand, and ultimately increase the amount of UK steel used in both public and private UK projects. The Steel Pipeline shows how the government plans to use over 3 million tonnes of steel \u2013 worth around £500 million \u2013 over the next decade, on infrastructure projects such as the construction of Hinkley Point C and the maintenance and upgrading of the UK\u2019s motorway network.<\/p>"}

This is because steel for our major programmes is mainly sourced by our prime contractors and the supply chains are complex.<\/p><p>UK suppliers have, however, made a significant contribution to the supply of steel for some of our largest defence equipment projects, including 88% of the structural steel for the Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers and 50% of the value of the steel required for the Batch 1 Type 26 ships. The specialist nature of some of our steel requirements means that UK steel producers do not always have the capability to supply our programmes.<\/p><p>This Government is committed to creating the right conditions in the UK for a competitive and sustainable steel industry. It publishes its future pipeline for steel requirements, together with data on how Departments are complying with steel procurement guidance on:<\/p><p>www.gov.uk/government/publications/steel-public-procurement.<\/p><p>This enables UK steel manufacturers to better plan and bid for Government contracts.<\/p>"}
