The UK is a strong supporter of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) and we work closely with the partnership. The GPEI has reduced cases of polio by 99.9% since 1988. Notwithstanding its success, transmission of the poliovirus has not been interrupted. The UK has statutory targets for both air quality and greenhouse gas emissions across the whole economy. For greenhouse gases, statutory mechanisms set national targets every five years in the form of carbon budgets, as established by the Climate Change Act 2008.<\/p>

For air quality, the Government consulted on a world leading Clean Air Strategy earlier this year, which includes 2020 and 2030 targets for five key air pollutants (nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter, sulphur dioxide, ammonia and volatile organic compounds). The Government intends to publish the final strategy by the end of this year. Until we can be certain of the outcome of Brexit negotiations our duty as a responsible government is to prepare for all eventualities, including \u2018no deal\u2019. On 23 August 2018, therefore, the Department wrote to all pharmaceutical companies that supply the United Kingdom with prescription only or pharmacy medicines from, or via, the European Union/European Economic Area, asking them to ensure they have a minimum of six weeks\u2019 additional supply in the UK, over and above their business as usual operational buffer stocks, by 29 March 2019 in the event of a no-deal scenario.<\/p>

Since then, we have received very good engagement from industry who share our aims of ensuring continuity of medicines supply for patients is maintained and able to cope with any potential delays at the border that may arise in the short term in the event of a no-deal Brexit.<\/p>

We understand that statins are vitally important to many people in this country. However, the Department recognises that through its medicines supply contingency programme it is requesting sensitive commercial information from pharmaceutical companies. To reassure participating companies, we have committed to treating all information received confidentially, securely and to using it only for the purposes of the Department\u2019s programme. The value of the department\u2019s contract with M&C Saatchi for the 2018-19 financial year is £2.55 million. It was awarded following a competitive tender through a Crown Commercial Service communications framework.<\/p>
The contract covers the development of a new integrated communications campaign to change perceptions of apprenticeships and to encourage more people to see the positive value that apprenticeships can have on their business or their career.<\/p>
It includes agency fees, the cost of producing the new advertising campaign and promotional content, the development of a new digital service and third-party costs, such as research.<\/p>
