The Government asked industry to develop the code of practice for the management of residential property to promote consistent and high standards of property management. Ensuring that landlords and letting agents are aware of their responsibilities can only be of benefit to all tenants. Industry held a public consultation on the code of practice from 2 to 30 April and a number of groups including Shelter, all three Property Ombudsmen and the Electrical Safety First formally responded.
The code of practice has been welcomed by the sector and I am confident that the code, the how to rent guide and the model tenancy agreement will all improve standards and increase the satisfaction of tenants living in the private rented sector.

The How to Rent guide which was published on 10 June 2014, has been viewed on the gov.uk website over 30,000 times and is promoted by a large number of organisations (included Shelter and Citizens Advice) on their websites. We have also used social media to raise awareness of the guide and wrote to all MPs in England asking them to promote the guide amongst their constituents. We closely monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of our marketing strategy to make sure the information reaches as many tenants and potential tenants as possible and continue to promote it through working with tenants organisations, the tenancy deposit protection schemes, advice services, landlords, agents and property search websites.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4009", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Sir Brandon Lewis"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Great Yarmouth"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Brandon Lewis"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2014-11-17", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "previousAnswerVersion" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/114650/answer/previousversion/27249", "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4009", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Sir Brandon Lewis"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Great Yarmouth"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Brandon Lewis"} } , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2014-11-17T11:42:27.923Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "7"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Communities and Local Government"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Communities and Local Government"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2014-11-05", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Private Rented Housing"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, what steps his Department has taken to publicise its How to Rent guide; and whether his Department evaluated its success in communicating with private tenants.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/1591", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Tim Farron"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Westmorland and Lonsdale"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Tim Farron"} ], "uin" : "213490"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/114943", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "HM Treasury"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/114943/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "
Although splitting the support may appear straightforward, the reality is likely to be quite different. If, under current arrangements, parents cannot agree who should receive the support, they are just as unlikely to agree about how the payments should be split where more formal arrangements exist.

Directing payment of Child Tax Credit to the person mainly responsible for looking after the children ensures that the money goes to the person most likely to be providing day to day care. Even where care of the child is shared it is usually the case that there is one person that bears more of the weight of everyday responsibility for the child and meets the everyday expenditure.

The Government has already prioritised investing in early education and child care to support all families, including those with separated parents, through: extending the free entitlement to provide 15 hours a week of free early education and child care for all three and four-year-olds, and to 40% of two-year-olds from lower income families; and providing 70% of child care costs through the Working Tax Credit and extending this support under Universal Credit to those working fewer than 16 hours a week.
