Public Health England (PHE) has a wide ranging programme designed to tackle the rising mortality and morbidity from liver disease. At each stage officials at the Department are in discussion with PHE.<\/p>

In response to the All Party Parliamentary Hepatology Group report PHE has committed to producing a Liver Disease Framework. This will focus on public health action to tackle risk factors for liver disease and inequalities in relation to liver disease. Work has already begun to bring together expertise within PHE on the major risk factors for liver disease (alcohol, hepatitis B and C and obesity), data on liver disease and its risk factors and on death and dying from liver disease. Many of the actions to tackle the major risk factors require a coordinated approach between PHE and NHS England.<\/p>

A meeting will be held on 25 November between PHE officials, NHS England officials, Departmental officials and representatives of Charities to outline the emerging framework and to seek comment and advice. The Lead for Liver Disease at PHE is working closely with the National Clinical Director for Gastroenterology. The Department is kept informed of PHE\u2019s work programme on liver disease through discussion and communication.<\/p>

The consultation Smoking in private vehicles carrying children - consultation on proposed regulations to be made under the Children and Families Act 2014<\/em> closed on 27 August 2014. We are now considering all responses carefully and will make a decision on the content of the regulations.<\/p> <\/p> <\/p> <\/p> A consultation on the introduction of regulations for standardised packaging of tobacco products<\/em> closed on 7 August 2014. In line with European Union requirements, the draft regulations must be considered under the European Technical Standards Directive at the stage at which substantial amendments can still be made. The draft regulations were notified to the European Commission (EC) on 29 August.<\/p> <\/p> <\/p> <\/p> The notification requires a \u2018stand still\u2019 period of three months for the EC and other Member States to consider the content of the draft regulations and give us their opinions. If a detailed opinion is provided, the Government is obliged to extend the period to six months. We anticipate that this will be the case. Under European rules, we will not be able to make the regulations until the period has elapsed.<\/p> <\/p> <\/p> <\/p> The Government has not yet made a final decision on whether to introduce regulations to require standardised packaging of tobacco products.<\/p> <\/p> <\/p> <\/p> Summary reports on both consultations will be published in due course.<\/p> <\/p>"}
