The latest Tech Nation report showed the UK attracts more VC tech investment than any other European nation, with £6.3 billion raised in 2018. The UK is preparing to strengthen its trade ties with international partners, including China and India post EU-exit.<\/p>

In January 2018, the UK and China launched a Joint Trade and Investment Review to explore options to enhance their trade and investment relationship, without pre-judging outcomes. My Rt Hon. Friend the Secretary of State for International Trade visited China five times in 2018 to discuss our ambition for a strong trade partnership.<\/p>

The UK-India Joint Trade Review, announced during the Prime Minister\u2019s visit to India in 2016, has helped us better understand the UK-India trade relationship. In April 2018, both Prime Ministers agreed to forge a new trade partnership, to take forward recommendations from the Review. If the UK leaves the European Union without an agreement, the EU will be required to apply its MFN tariff regime to all UK exports, in compliance to WTO regulations. At the moment, the EU has not given any indication that it will modify its MFN tariff regime as a consequence of the UK leaving the EU without any agreement.<\/p>

The Government is carefully considering the implications of the Court of Appeal judgment of 20 June for decision making. We disagree with the judgment and are seeking permission to appeal. While we do this, we will not grant any new licences for exports to Saudi Arabia and its coalition partners (UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain and Egypt) for possible use in the conflict in Yemen.<\/p>

Extant licences are not immediately affected by this judgment but decisions about these licences are remitted to the Government to reconsider in the light of the judgment. The Campaign Against Arms Trade did not seek an Order to suspend licences and the Court has not ordered their suspension. It remains the Government\u2019s priority to leave the EU with an agreement. If the UK leaves the EU with an agreement, the UK will enter the implementation period during which eggs and eggs products from the EU will be still subject to tariff-free access.<\/p>

If the UK leaves the EU without an agreement, the UK would implement a temporary tariff regime, which was announced on March 13th<\/sup> 2019. The temporary tariff is a balanced tariff policy which aims to minimise costs to business and mitigate price impacts on consumers, while also supporting UK producers as far as possible.<\/p>


Government will continue to listen to stakeholder feedback regarding the temporary tariff, and have committed to holding a public consultation on the UK\u2019s permanent MFN tariff policy.
