There are a range of tough measures to deal with people who pose a serious threat to the UK. As of June 2018, there had been around 40 convictions of individuals who had been prosecuted following their return from Syria, for a range of offences connected to their activities overseas or subsequent counter-terrorism investigations.<\/p>
This number includes a ten year custodial sentence for Mohammed Abdullah, a British national convicted in December 2017 of IS membership, after leaked documents from a defector revealed his role as a \u201cspecialist sniper\u201d, and the minimum of 40 years for Khalid Ali who was sentenced in 2018 for planning a terrorist attack in Westminster.<\/p>
The majority of those who have returned did so in the earlier stages of the conflict and have been investigated. A significant proportion of these individuals are assessed as no longer being of national security concern.<\/p>"}

Investigating authorities have access to a broad range of investigative tools and financial intelligence which can be easily shared between relevant agencies. Since 2015, investigators may also share and obtain information from other Law Enforcement Authorities (LEAs) and financial institutions through the Joint Money Laundering Intelligence Task Force, a public-private collaboration.<\/p>
The UK\u2019s capacity for undertaking terrorist financing investigations was extended by the Criminal Finances Act 2017 which now permits the financial investigation powers in the Terrorism Act 2000 to be exercised by civilian accredited financial investigators employed by LEAs and allows for these orders to be recognised across different UK jurisdictions.<\/p>
The international Financial Action Task Force, in their December 2018 report on the UK\u2019s measures to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, concluded that \u2018the UK has been highly effective in investigating, prosecuting and convicting a range of terrorist financing activity\u2019.<\/p>"}

In the Criminal Finances Act 2017 the Government introduced provisions that will allow certain regulated sector entities to share information between themselves, and with the NCA, where there is a suspicion of money laundering and terrorist financing.
