The UK is committed to negotiating an ambitious free trade agreement with the United States as soon as we have left the European Union. Trade with East Asia is increasing. Leaving the EU is an opportunity to strengthen relationships further including securing continuity of South Korea's EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and engaging with Japan on a future trade agreement that will be as ambitious, high standard and mutually beneficial as the Japan-EU EPA, on which it will be based.<\/p>

DIT is leading on Government\u2019s shared intent to safeguard the UK\u2019s position as a world-leading destination for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).<\/p>

The UK has many strengths that attract investors: an open, liberal economy, world-class talent and a business-friendly environment. The most recent data from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) ranked the UK as third globally for FDI in 2017\u2014and the number one destination in Europe, ahead of Germany.<\/p>

DIT is supporting investment into local communities by targeting promotional support towards projects with the greatest potential to maximise national wealth and value for money. The Canada-UK bilateral trading relationship is an important one and vital to our economy. Total trade between the UK and Canada in 2018 totalled £18.4bn and both sides have committed to deepening our commercial relationship further.<\/p>

My Ministerial colleagues and I have regular contact with the Canadian Administration, business representatives and others, including through our diplomatic missions in Canada, to support and increase investment and trade flows.<\/p>
