Widening access to higher education (HE) is a priority for this Government, and everyone with the talent and potential to succeed in HE should have the opportunity to do so, regardless of their background. Good progress has been made, with 18 year olds from disadvantaged backgrounds 43% more likely to go to university now than in 2009, but we want to do more.

That is why we continue to push for improvement in these areas. Through the Higher Education and Research Act 2017, the Office for Students will have a statutory duty to promote equality of opportunity in access and participation for all students. The Act introduces a Transparency Duty that will require HE institutions to publish data on the access and success of certain groups of students. Greater transparency will push universities to build on what has already been achieved.

Our guidance to the Director for Fair Access in 2016 asked him to encourage institutions to make more effort in the area of recruiting more mature learners and this is reflected in guidance to institutions on access agreements. We are removing barriers to the growth of accelerated courses, which particularly appeal to mature students.

The Government is listening to the sector’s concerns about Brexit and has taken action to provide greater certainty. We have announced that EU students starting their courses in the academic year 18/19 or before will continue to be eligible for student loans and home fee status for the duration of their course.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4039", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Johnson of Marylebone"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Orpington"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Joseph Johnson"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2017-07-19", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2017-07-19T11:44:25.97Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "60"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Education"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Education"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2017-07-13", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Universities: Admissions"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Education, what estimate she has made of the fall in the number of (a) overall applications, (b) mature student applications and (c) EU student applications to UK universities for the 2017-18 academic year.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/465", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Gordon Marsden"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Blackpool South"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Gordon Marsden"} ], "uin" : "4904"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/751741", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Education"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/751741/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

Ensuring school buildings are safe is our top priority. Since 2015, we have committed more than £4bn to maintain and improve the condition of the school estate, including £1.4bn in 2017-18. Where remedial work is deemed necessary for schools to remain safe for continued use, we will work with local authorities and other responsible bodies to ensure that lack of financial resources will not prevent it going ahead.

The two academies where ACM cladding has been identified have been alerted to the test results. As a precautionary step, both schools have already been inspected by the Fire and Rescue Service who confirmed appropriate measures are in place to mitigate the risks from potential fire, and the buildings have now been declared safe for continued use.

The Department for Education is continuing to work closely with the schools concerned to support them and ensure all the necessary steps are taken to ensure the continued safety of the buildings.

All schools already have to follow a range of strict fire safety regulations designed to ensure they are as safe as possible and well prepared in the event of a fire. They must have robust plans to follow in the event of a fire, conduct regular fire drills, install sprinklers if an assessment deems them necessary and typically have multiple exit routes.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/111", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Nick Gibb"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Bognor Regis and Littlehampton"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Nick Gibb"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2017-07-24", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2017-07-24T16:03:09.797Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "60"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Education"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Education"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2017-07-13", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Schools: Insulation"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Education, with reference to the update on school cladding safety checks published by her Department on 13 July 2017, what additional resources will be made available to the relevant local authorities to (a) remove ACM cladding from the school buildings on which they have been found and (b) ensure that those school buildings will be of limited combustibility.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4356", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Angela Rayner"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Ashton-under-Lyne"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Angela Rayner"} ], "uin" : "4938"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/751742", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Education"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/751742/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

The updated content for GCSE drama and A level drama and theatre studies clarifies that all pupils studying for these qualifications have the entitlement to experience live theatre. This reaffirms the Government’s commitment to providing pupils with an enriching arts education. Taking pupils to see a live performance is a small part of the cost of providing a drama GCSE or A level and a small portion of a secondary school’s overall budget. The vast majority of schools already take GCSE and AS/A level drama students to live performances.

We have just announced that under the national funding formula there will be an additional £1.3 billion for schools and high needs across 2018-19 and 2019-20, on top of existing spending plans.
