Sentencing is a matter for our independent courts, who take into account all circumstances of the case, including any aggravating and mitigating factors.

Whilst there is persuasive evidence that short custodial sentences do not help some offenders turn their backs on crime, protecting the public will always be our top priority. Under this government, the most serious offenders are more likely to go to prison, and for longer, helping protect the public and keep communities safe.

The UK Living Wage (sometimes referred to as the ‘Real Living Wage’) and the London Living Wage, are both voluntary rates set by the Living Wage Foundation. These are not statutory figures which relate to the government policy in this area, and so are not legally binding on employers. The statutory minimum rates are the National Living Wage and the National Minimum Wage. For comparison, the National Living Wage is currently £7.83 per hour, and increased by 4.4% in April 2018. The increases in the National Living Wage and the National Minimum Wage have produced increases for over 2 million workers this year, across the economy, and increased pay by £2,000 for those on the minimum rate, since these statutory arrangements were introduced. All MoJ employees are paid at least the National Minimum Wage and the National Living Wage.

1643 staff employed by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ HQ, HMCTS, LAA, OPG and CICA) and 561 by HMPPS who work outside Greater London are paid at a rate below the Real National Living Wage of £9 per hour.

(a) Information about the volumes and outcomes of appeals to the First-tier Tribunal (Social Security and Child Support) (SSCS) including (a) Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is published at: www.gov.uk/government/collections/tribunals-statistics

HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) does not record data based on constituencies. SSCS appeals are listed into the hearing venue nearest to the appellant’s home address. The published Tribunals Statistics CSV files provide information about the outcomes of PIP appeals for individual hearing venues including Leeds, where appeals from constituents living in the Leeds area would be heard.

(b) This information is not held centrally. The Tribunal hears appeals generally against decisions on entitlement to benefit, or its rate of payment. A complete list of firms (including both Law Centres and those in private practice) which hold a legal aid contract, and categories of law is available at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/directory-of-legal-aid-providers. This shows which other firms may provide legal aid services in those regions where a law centre does not operate.

"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4517", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lucy Frazer"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "South East Cambridgeshire"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Lucy Frazer"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2018-11-12", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2018-11-12T17:33:18.057Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "54"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Justice"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Justice"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2018-11-06", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Law Centres: Legal Aid Scheme"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, how many law centres have offered legal aid in each region in each year since 2010.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/3915", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Gloria De Piero"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Ashfield"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Gloria De Piero"} ], "uin" : "188788"} ], "itemsPerPage" : 10, "next" : "http://eldaddp.azurewebsites.net/answeredquestions.text?_page=1&answeringDeptId=54&min-answer.questionFirstAnswered.=2018-03-01T17%3A36%3A01.203Z&max-answer.dateOfAnswer=2018-11-14", "page" : 0, "startIndex" : 1, "totalResults" : 2141, "type" : ["http://purl.org/linked-data/api/vocab#ListEndpoint", "http://purl.org/linked-data/api/vocab#Page"]} }
