I appreciate the huge impact Covid-19 has had on business owners and employees in the Welsh tourism sector, and have met with stakeholders across the industry to discuss concerns.

I am in regular discussions with the Welsh Government on the reopening of the tourism sector to ensure that Welsh businesses can make the most of this summer season. I wrote to the First Minister on 9 June on this issue. I welcome the Welsh Government’s plans for a partial reopening of the tourism sector in July, and I will continue to urge them to do more to support this vital industry.

I have regular discussions with the Welsh Government on how best to reopen the hospitality and tourism sector in Wales to make the most of the summer season, whilst respecting social distancing. Helping the sector to reopen will allow the industry to start rebuilding.

Through the Government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) and Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS), the UK Government has supported over 400,000 jobs in Wales. Over £2.3bn in Barnett consequential funding has been allocated to date to the Welsh Government to support its response to the virus. This demonstrates the value to Wales of being part of the United Kingdom.

Using the scientific advice available, the UK Government has set out a clear plan on how we will rebuild the UK for a world with Covid-19 whilst respecting devolved decision-making. Subject to scientific advice, next month will see the partial reopening of some of the tourism and hospitality sector in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. I welcome the Welsh Government’s plans for a partial reopening of the sector in July. However, given its importance to the Welsh economy, with over 9.5% of the workforce directly employed in the visitor economy and over £6 billion in visitor spending in 2018, I would urge the Welsh Government to do more to ensure that Wales is not left behind the rest of the UK.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/3944", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Simon Hart"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Simon Hart"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2020-06-22", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2020-06-22T15:25:15.147Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "28"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Wales"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Wales"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2020-06-16", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Hospitality Industry and Tourism: Wales"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Wales, whether the Government plans to provide additional support to the hospitality and tourism industry in Wales via the Welsh Government during the recovery from the covid-19 outbreak.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4501", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Gerald Jones"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Gerald Jones"} ], "uin" : "59838"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1203557", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Wales Office"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1203557/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

The Government is clear that we will leave the transition period by the end of the year. Welsh ports will benefit from leaving the transition period as it ensures that we take back control of our laws, trade, borders and money on the basis of the agreement we reached in October and which enabled us to leave the EU on 31 January.

Furthermore, on 12 June, the Government committed to building new border facilities in Great Britain for carrying out required checks, such as customs compliance, transit, and Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) checks, as well as providing targeted support to ports to build new infrastructure. Where there is no space at ports for new infrastructure, the Government will build new inland sites where these checks and other activities will take place.
