The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) monitors the safety of all medicines on the market in the United Kingdom. The MHRA recently reviewed a research paper on the effects of paracetamol on blood pressure in patients with hypertension without pain and sought expert advice from the Pharmacovigilance Expert Advisory Group of the Commission on Human Medicines. The experts considered the limitations of the study as it was not representative of the whole population who experience pain and recommended that further evidence is needed to determine effect on blood pressure within the wider population.

The MHRA keeps all new evidence on the safety of paracetamol kept under review. Over £50 million has been invested in research projects into the long term effects of COVID-19, with £38.6 million awarded to 19 projects commissioned through two research calls.

The National Institute for Health Research’s (NIHR) second research call specified the need for studies to review possible treatments and interventions and develop a greater understanding of the underlying mechanisms of the disease. Six of the studies funded through this call are directly examining treatments and therapies.

Further research on the long term effects of COVID-19 and providing support for those affected has been funded through the NIHR’s programme funding streams. These include a £3.5 million award to the HEAL-COVID study to develop treatments for COVID-19 which reduce the long term risks of death and disability.

The NIHR continues to welcome funding applications for research into any aspect of human health, including potential treatments for post-COVID-19 syndrome. It is not usual practice to ring-fence funds for particular topics or conditions. Applications are subject to peer review and judged in open competition, with awards being made on the basis of the importance of the topic to patients and health and care services, value for money and scientific quality.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4492", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Maria Caulfield"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Lewes"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Maria Caulfield"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2022-04-20", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2022-04-20T08:23:27Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "17"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Health and Social Care"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Health and Social Care"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2022-03-28", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Long Covid: Medical Treatments"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, whether his Department is taking steps to prioritise targeted, lab-based studies to find possible treatments for those suffering from long covid.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4671", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Afzal Khan"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Manchester, Gorton"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Afzal Khan"} ], "uin" : "148370"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1454793", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department of Health and Social Care"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1454793/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

All regulated healthcare professionals are required to register with the relevant professional regulator, such as the General Medical Council and the Nursing and Midwifery Council, in order to practice in the United Kingdom. All regulators have procedures in place to assess the skills, knowledge and experience of healthcare professionals who have qualified overseas to ensure that they meet standards of practice in the UK.
