Our Ambassador has met the families of several political prisoners. The Ambassador and other Embassy officials also regularly meet former political prisoners themselves. They remain in close contact with the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma) and other civil society networks in support of their work, reviewing the cases of political prisoners and advocating for the release of those that have been unjustly convicted.<\/p>
We welcome the release of thousands of political prisoners under the current Burmese government. However, we remain very concerned by the continued arrests, detentions and sentencing of political activists. Human rights defenders (HRDs), including women HRDs, play a critical role in the fight against sexual violence in conflict through advocacy, documenting and reporting, providing support to survivors, and holding governments to account. In recognition of the importance of their work, we supported the participation of a large number of HRDs at the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict and have consulted them throughout the development of the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative (PSVI). We will continue to do so as we take forward the outcomes of the Summit through our missions across the globe, both in conflict and post-conflict countries and with our other PSVI partners.
Any UK Post with a significant human rights element to its work already has an existing human rights focal point which would include responsibility for engaging with local HRDs. We also work locally with EU and other colleagues to support HRDs, in line with the EU Guidelines on HRDs and recently updated internal guidance, by speaking out publicly in support of their work, providing funding, raising specific instances of abuse or detention with governments; and working to promote a more conducive atmosphere for their activities.<\/p>"}

The lack of democratic freedoms in Syria is at the root of the current crisis. The recent elections held by the Assad regime were a parody of democracy, taking place against the backdrop of horrendous violence, and with many millions of Syrians disenfranchised.<\/p>
Since its formation in October 2012, we have provided the National Coalition with practical and political support designed to help it become ever more credible and inclusive and to promote democracy inside Syria. We have also worked with grass-roots civil society groups and local councils in Syria to promote good governance at a local level. We have not made recent specific representations on animal welfare issues in China. However the UK is a leading supporter of co-ordinated international efforts to protect animal welfare. We hosted a high level conference on the Illegal Wildlife Trade in London in February 2014, and over 40 countries, including China, participated. Chinese authorities have since passed a new law making the consumption of rare wild animals an offence, punishable by ten years in prison.<\/p>

The Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my right hon. Friend the Member for Richmond (Yorks) (Mr Hague) and other EU Foreign Ministers met with the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Pavlo Klimkin, at the EU Foreign Affairs Council on 23 June. During the meeting Mr Klimkin presented President Poroshenko's peace plan, and asked for a clear EU message of support. Mr Klimkin stressed that the peace process should be inclusive, and reflected on the risk that, if the current situation were prolonged, illegal groups would destabilise the situation further.<\/p>
In the Conclusions of the meeting, the EU reiterated its strong support for Ukraine's unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, and called upon Russia to do likewise, to repudiate the latest lawless acts in Eastern Ukraine and to contribute to stabilize the situation. The EU called on all parties to exercise restraint and commended the Ukrainian authorities for pursuing their law and order operations in a measured manner. The EU also encouraged the government in Kyiv to contribute further to reducing tensions.<\/p>

Gibraltar is discussed in the UN's Fourth Committee and Special Committee on Decolonisation. The most recent Fourth Committee decision on Gibraltar urges the Governments of Spain and the United Kingdom to reach a solution in light of all preceding resolutions, while listening to the interests and aspirations of Gibraltar that are legitimate under international law.<\/p>
The United Kingdom robustly defends its sovereignty over Gibraltar at the UN through rights of reply in the various UN fora in which Spain raises the issue.
