The Government recognises the valuable contribution that overseas workers make to the UK economy and to our society. We are currently developing options for the future system which will be designed to work in the national interest.<\/p>
On the 18 September, the Migration Advisory Committee published their final report on the current patterns of EEA migration into the UK. We are carefully considering their fourteen recommendations. Defra is working closely with the Home Office to ensure that the food and farming sector, including meat processing, has access to the workforce it needs, as part of the future immigration policy.<\/p>

During the implementation period, the UK will remain a signatory of the EU Treaties and the rights and obligations contained in them, including with respect to the movement of agricultural workers. Our domestic implementation of EU law remains in place.<\/p>
On Thursday 6th September, the Home Office and Defra announced a nationwide pilot scheme to bring migrant workers to UK farms. More information is available at Gov.uk. Defra does not collect data on the nationality of those employed in agriculture for the individual countries of the UK, including Wales. It does have information on the number of non-UK EU nationals (EU27) in the Agriculture sector collected by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) as part of the Annual Population Survey (APS).
