Government is investing £48bn in Network Rail over 2019-2024, alongside significant projects like HS2. This significant investment in the rail network gives companies across the entire rail supply chain sector, including in the North West of England, the certainty to invest in people and skills.

In 2016 DfT set ambitions through the Transport Infrastructure Skills Strategy to increase apprenticeships in road and rail bodies to help address skills shortages in the transport sector and ensure that the transport sector has the capacity and capability to deliver planned investment.

DfT works in collaboration with employers across the sector to create quality apprenticeships through an industry body, the Strategic Transport Apprenticeship Taskforce (STAT) to deliver these ambitions. Network Rail, HS2, the Rail Delivery Group, the National Skills Academy for Rail and TfL are members of STAT. So far, over 5000 apprenticeships have been created in road and rail bodies.

Since 2017, the Department for Transport has used its procurement to drive apprenticeship numbers through contracts, including those within the rail industry.

Manchester's Growth Strategy is looking to maximise skills to make the most of the opportunities that HS2 will bring to the area and sets out aspirations to develop a skilled workforce through close work ‘with the four Universities within Greater Manchester to provide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) skills through higher apprenticeship, graduate and post-graduate qualifications in close partnership with industry.

Rail, like many other industries, have set out their interest in developing a Sector Deal and have been working across the industry and with government to develop their proposal. We expect a focus on skills and apprenticeships to form a key part of a Rail Sector Deal.

We have also this year been running the Year of Engineering to increase the number and diversity of engineers across the UK and to address the engineering skills gap.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/3996", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Andrew Jones"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Harrogate and Knaresborough"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Andrew Jones"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2018-12-04", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2018-12-04T14:24:42.397Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "27"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Transport"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Transport"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2018-11-26", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Railways: North West"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what steps his Department is taking to secure skilled jobs in the rail industry for the North West of England.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/478", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Field of Birkenhead"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Birkenhead"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Frank Field"} ], "uin" : "195499"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1012512", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department of Health and Social Care"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1012512/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

The English Surveillance Programme for Antimicrobial Utilisation and Resistance Report 2018 provides information on National Health Service dental prescribing in dental practices and consultations. From 2013 to 2017, the trend of antimicrobial prescriptions which includes antibiotics, continued to decrease by 24.8%. The number of daily defined doses of antimicrobials per 1,000 inhabitants per day prescribed by dentists was 0.19 in 2013 and 0.16 in 2016; with an 8.3% decrease from 2016 to 2017. The decline was largely attributed to less amoxicillin being prescribed between 2013 and 2017. A copy of the report is attached.

Information on how many children have been prescribed antibiotics or more than one course of antibiotics for dental problems in England over the last five years is not available as this data is not collected.

No assessment has been made of the potential impact of prescribing antibiotics to children who are waiting for tooth extractions due to tooth decay on their immune system and the levels of antimicrobial resistance.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4545", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord O'Shaughnessy"} } , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Lord O'Shaughnessy"} , "attachment" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1012512/answer/attachment/1", "fileName" : {"_value" : "ESPAUR_2018_report.pdf"} , "title" : "Antimicrobial Utilisation and Resistance Report"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2018-12-04", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "groupedQuestionUIN" : [{"_value" : "HL11707"} , {"_value" : "HL11708"} , {"_value" : "HL11709"} ], "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2018-12-04T14:27:43.103Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "17"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Health and Social Care"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Health and Social Care"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2018-11-22", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Dental Health: Antibiotics"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "2"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25277", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Lords"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask Her Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of trends in primary care dental antibiotic prescribing in England since 2013.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/3394", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Colwyn"} } , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Lord Colwyn"} ], "uin" : "HL11704"} ], "itemsPerPage" : 10, "next" : "http://eldaddp.azurewebsites.net/answeredquestions.text?_page=1&answer.dateOfAnswer=2018-12-04&min-ddpModified.=2018-12-04T14%3A57%3A02.036Z&max-questionFirstAnswered.=2018-12-04T14%3A40%3A22.957Z", "page" : 0, "startIndex" : 1, "totalResults" : 15, "type" : ["http://purl.org/linked-data/api/vocab#ListEndpoint", "http://purl.org/linked-data/api/vocab#Page"]} }
