A range of approaches are in place to help diagnose people living with HIV as early as possible. The Government has mandated local authorities in England to commission comprehensive open access sexual health services, including free sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment. The National Health Service continues to provide world class treatment and care for people living with HIV. The United Kingdom Rare Disease Strategy, published in 2013, sets out our commitment to raising awareness about all rare diseases including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and our strategic vision for improving the lives of all those affected. The Strategy promotes improvements to ensure that people living with a rare disease receive high-quality care.

The Government recognizes the need for awareness raising and training of health care professionals for rare diseases. This is being taken forward through the work of the UK Rare Diseases Policy Board and NHS England’s Rare Diseases Implementation plan, which commits NHS England to engaging with the Royal College of General Practitioners (GPs) and the Nursing and Midwifery Council on opportunities for GPs and health visitors to recognise and facilitate earlier diagnosis of rare diseases.

There are limited drug treatment options for IPF and two drugs, Pirfenidone and Nintedanib, are commissioned following National Institute for Health and Care Excellence Technology Appraisals. The service delivery factors affecting vaccination coverage in the UK have been reviewed and most recently updated for National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in 2017. This is available to view at the following link:

https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/PH21

NICE therefore recommends the use of call/recall as one of their quality standards to improve uptake in children. Further information is available at the following link:

https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/qs145

NICE is currently consulting on the scope for a further review. Further information on this consultation is available to view at the following link:

The National Institute of Health Research Health Protection Research Unit in immunisation have also conducted a process evaluation of how the routine vaccination programme is implemented at general practitioner practices in England. This study concluded that greater capacity, as measured by appointments per patient, may be associated with higher coverage in children.
