Defra launched the Reward and Recognition Fund (RRF) that encouraged local authorities and community groups to devise and assess innovative ideas for reward and recognition initiatives that would encourage positive waste behaviours such as recycling or reuse. The RRF awarded £1.6 million to 25 organisations, delivering 31 unique pilots. The final waste reward and recognition fund evaluation report was published in May 2016 and is available on http://randd.defra.gov.uk/Document.aspx?Document=13764_RRFFinalReport.pdf

The report concludes that although Reward and Recognition can play a useful role in communications and engagement with householders or communities building valuable social capital, it does need careful thought and management to achieve the best outcome. The final report also highlights important points to consider before taking the decision to set up such schemes, providing evidence and conclusions which can be used by local authorities and community groups.

In autumn 2017, an independent working group set up under the Litter Strategy for England held a call for evidence on measures to reduce littering of drinks containers and promote recycling. This included seeking evidence on the costs, benefits and impacts of deposit return schemes. The Working Group has recently submitted their report to Ministers, who will be making a decision on the next steps shortly.

The Joint Report from the negotiators of the EU and the UK Government published on 8 December 2017 stated that UK entities’ right to participate in EU Multi-Annual Financial Framework (MFF) programmes 2014-2020 will be unaffected by the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. The Government has not made any estimate of urban tree planting rates to counter air pollution. The Air Quality Expert Group (AQEG) report on the Effects of Vegetation on Urban Air Pollution, due to be published this year, concludes that overall, vegetation and trees in particular are beneficial for air quality, but they are not a solution to the air quality problems at a city scale. The Forestry Commission publishes progress against the 11 million trees target quarterly. Woodland created so far using CAP funding during the course of this Parliament (counted from April to September 2017 - the most recent assessment) equates to 692 hectares, or approximately 1,074,000 trees. Woodland created during the previous Parliament (2015 to 2017) amounted to 1,104 hectares, or approximately 1,502,000 trees.

River Basin Management Plans provide the framework for protecting and improving water quality, by setting ambitious environmental goals and actions to be taken in catchments over the next 6 years and beyond. The plans were updated in 2015 and will complement the Government’s 25-year Environment Plan. This will manage the environment in a more integrated way, harnessing the potential of data, local partnerships, and environmental technology to deliver more improvements to our environment in tandem with economic growth. More information on the plans can be viewed on GOV.UK under “River Basin Management plans: 2015.”

The current plans confirm over £3 billion investment in the water environment by 2021, which will lead to at least 680 improved water bodies by 2021, aiming for over 130 to have more abundant fish populations and 440 to have less pollution.
